Gentlemen, Mr Cavanami should be excited to hear that I fully agree with President Donald on one thing and that is how he treats the Peoples Republic of China.Yesterday he agreed to sell a load of warplanes to Taiwan and also the tariff increases show the Chinamen that they are vulnerable . Velly goos. My joy would be complete if only he would also let his countrymen know that they are the ones who pay the higher tariffs and the US farmers pay the price for Chinese sanctions. And then again the subsidies for the farmers are taken from the taxpayer. Another nice move was to complain about Jewish people not to vote Republican although he claims to have done a lot for Israel. Because it shows how he is thinking: I give you something and if you don´t love me accordingly you are an idiot. Third and last the Greenland purchase project. Til yesterday I was willing to think that the biased communist press just promoted some rumour to hurt the President but now he did even cancel a state visit because the Danes don´t sell. What a truely unbelievable story. The man needs treatment for his brain. Many people not seriously worried any more because it has become normal. Although I have to add that the US punters lost a big opprtunity to upgrade their social standing within the Thai bargirl community; I may remind the board of poster ricscurrs piece 17 years ago proposing to use the unspoilt image of Greenland answering " Whereyoucomeflomm" by " I am man from Greenland " , now even supported by suitable passport. A chance has been lost. Bubi - political analyst -

The mainland and HK are totally different culturally (as well as dialect except for the immediate area closest to HK which also speaks a fair amount of Cantonese). If the mainland allowed unfettered travel to HK would be swamped. That said, Chinese government is in a conundrum. Crush it harshly and they may very well hurt themselves internationally in how they are seen and may find major countries denouncing them and even taking some measures. Let the protest go on and it could be uncontrollable and tantamount to putting toothpaste back in the tube. I don't think HK will be able to sustain, the might is with the mainland. The mainland may do what America has always done (and others before it) and use their economic power as a threat to countries who give verbal support to the protesters.

The average Mainland Chinamen regard the HKG protesters as nothing but troublemakers who need a kick in the ass. Any intervention will be backed by big national support as much as they for example consider Taiwan and Tibet as integral parts of the Republic. The average Chinaman still wants to become rich, buy a BMW and gives a damn about politics.

    Strife in Hong Kong

I don't think you will see a western style revolution in China. Has there ever been? The USSR ended under the weight of its own fragile economy. There are countries and cultures where democracy simply doesn't work. Never has lasted and I think never will happen on an ongoing basis. The Chinese as well as the Russian peoples seem to prefer a strong, autocratic leader instead of shouldering their collective selves with governing via electing someone. Both cultures seem to admire strong, people who take leadership. Both countries were ruled by Emperors/Monarchies who had supreme power and communism was supposed to be governance by the people and both ended in strong, autocratic, totalitarian leaders (Mao and Stalin) who basically had similar powers to the monarchies they had historically. And still do. Russia has elections but its a joke. The people see in Putin a leader who will restore Russia's pride and they seem to accept that he has supreme power. Hong Kong, while under British rule technically were given a lot of autonomy and the people felt as if HK was their own loosely governed 1000s of kilometers away via a Brit governor. The HK Chinese had a fair amount of freedom under British rule and built a few generations of people who only knew semi autonomy and that isn't easy to give up.

Dumsoda's supposed to be dead? Really? I can hardly believe it. I am frightened. For the last 5 years I have been a regular guest with him in Nong Khai. He had together with his Thai wife a restaurant "Jing Joe... (Kangaroo)" and a guesthouse. That was in the Soi Rim Kong directly at the Mekong. In the year - I think - 2017 he moved; about 400 m to a Soi, whose name I don't have now. He told me that the rent had become too high. The restaurant went well, but the three to four rooms he rented were rarely occupied. Dumsoda, it was always good with you. Friendly, helpful, courteous. Wherever you are now, my dear John, I hope you are well. An affected and consternated Nasiadai

Can't believe I would say this, but the degree to which people actually listened and responded to each other on this board during its hey-day is something that sets it apart from others I've seen, which are just kind of shotgun posting, or squabbles. Back in the day, this one was much more about exchange and appreciation. Cheers to that.

Bubi, try to fix things in your own country before you attack the USA with things you have no idea about! A 76-year-old is among the victims of attacks and sexual assaults by 'foreign' male suspects during the weekend across Germany, according to local media. In Schleswig-Holstein, an elderly woman, 76, was reportedly harassed by a man with a "southern appearance" before he violently groped her and inflicted injuries that required hospitalization. "The suspect was a man who may already have been known to the police for similar crimes," a police spokesperson told Junge Freiheit. https://jungefreiheit.de/kultur/gesellschaft/2019/begrapscht-geschlagen-und-vergewaltigt-sexuelle-uebergriffe-am-wochenende/ A Syrian migrant brutally killed a man with a sword during a broad daylight attack in Stuttgart, Germany. The horrific incident was seen by numerous witnesses and began after the 28-year-old Syrian got into a heated argument with his 36-year-old German-Kazakh roommate. A video of the incident shows the perpetrator ruthlessly plunging the sword into the victim as he lay on the ground. According to reports, the victim had his arm completely hacked off. An 8-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a high speed train when a man of “African descent” pushed him and his mother onto the tracks this morning at Frankfurt’s main station. The mother was able to save her own life by rolling into the gap between the tracks, but lost hold of her son who was killed by the InterCity Express (ICE) train, which can travel at speeds up to 186mph. A 40-year-old man was arrested after the incident. Police say there is no connection between the alleged perpetrator and the victims.

Another excellent Cavanami source, they also claimed a Vince Foster has been murdered by the Clintons and that climate research is fake science. I guess this website is what the Trump followers consider unbiased. Could anybody open a Greenland thread? Proposed new capital Donald-Duck-City.

I first met DumbSoda at my first members meet up at Gullivers back around 2007. Although I live in Sydney and he in Melbourne we met up often until he moved up to LOS. Went up and visited him in Nong Kai a couple of years ago. Actually walked past him in the street and didn't recognize him. He'd dropped 30Kgs + and he made a joke that I'd gained about the same. That was DS...great sense of humor. A couple of evenings drinking the night away is how I will remember him. One of the good guys RIP old mate

    Strife in Hong Kong

Protests won't get HK independence. China will take more control eventually. Same with Taiwan but the people there will always have a rebellious spirit. They wont win over "hearts and minds" but they will control it. Similar in other places. Catalans and Basque in Spain, Scotland in the UK, one of several places in Russia, parts of India. Not saying all of them are equal in animus and independence mindset but all consider themselves "different" than the government and have or want a certain degree of autonomy.

Valiant efforts from HKers but in the end China will end. Its a matter of when not if. That's just the reality of things. China can do what Greece did when it had a meltdown and simply limit the amount of ATMs.
