Khun Kwanboon said to me that I need a camera for some souvenir photos. So we bought a Sony pocket camera in one of the big department stores in Krung Thep. My friend has led the negotiations and has translated. The Sanam Luang is one of my favourite places in Krung Thep. This place is indeed a Royal Place, that is the meaning of Sanam Luang. Some annotations about the music in the bars. Yesterday I was barhopping in Nana Plaza. I visited Spanky. Here is what I experienced: In many bars there is played “computer music†produced and played by a machine, boom, boom, boom. Horrible! It is played in a volume, in a loudness which is health-damaging. The eardrums fly off the ears and the ears begin to ache. The listening level is between 120-130 decibels! This corresponds to a pneumatic hammer at one meter or a jet plane turning on the afterburners. 1. The biggest part of the international audience is likely to be not happy listening this music. 2. I can not imagine that the girls like this kind of music. Never! It's actually happened a few times that I left a bar at once because of the loud and piercing noises, downright disgusting and obnoxious. I was not able to tolerate that bobbery, noise, bluster, roaring. The boss, the management of a bar has a duty of care for the girls dancing and working in those bars. To make it short: The positive economic development of Siam in the last decades, more jobs, more well paid jobs, the industrialization of the old rural Siam, the modernization, the transition to a modern industrial and service economy, the westernization - in the context of globalization - all these modify, change or even destroy the old traditional structures. The old traditional norms, values, principles of thinking, feeling and acting - minted buddhist – get replaced by Western, market-based values and behavior. Back to the girls of Nana Plaza. After my first days in Bangkok I stated: There never have been more beautiful, pretty, charming girls in NEP than ever! I have to clarify this statement. This sentence is due to my euphoric mood of the first days. Surprise number 1. The number of girls working in the bars, decreased massively; the bars downsized staff considerably. In the great, large bars there are significantly less than 50% of ladies in comparison with former years! In some large bars on the second floor there have been working and dancing 70, 80, 90 girls! They were crowded with ladies like sardines in a tin. They had three or even four dance shifts. And the girls were dancing with enthusiasm! Not shuffling like today. I think of the bars of the Hollywood group and bars like Vodoo and Pretty Lady and some others. In my experience and in my opinion in the years around 2000 there have been working 800 or more girls in the plaza. Since 2004, 2005 the number started to decrease; slowly but steadily. Today between 20 – 24 girls are dispersing in those bars in question. In the plaza there are round about 20 bars with ladies and 3 Kathoeybars (Casanova, Temptations 1 and 2, I think so). It can be assumed that 18 – 26 girls are working in the most bars. Some more girls populate the bars of Rainbow 1 and 2. That means that in the plaza 420 – 460 ladies are working. Maximal 460! Not more! Now I specify my sentence quoted above. After my experiences of more than 12 days of Nana Plaza I would now say that many of the girls are prettier and nicer than in former years. Yes, I am sure. 100%. In former years in one bar with – let us say - 30 ladies there were maybe 7 to 10 girls quite lovely. Today 12 to 15. In my humble opinion. Surprise number 2. I made a further experience. In former times the girls were much younger than today. Most girls belonged to the age group between 20 and 26. A lady older than 29 was considered to be “oldâ€. Nowadays the greatest age group is 25 to 30! And there are many many ladies who are older than 30! That is a surprise, isn’t it? The actually interesting questions are now: Why did the number of girls decreased so dramatically in the last years? Why do work so many “older†ladies in the bars nowadays? I give two possible answers: 1. Since round about 1985 Thailand has falling birth rates, for almost 30 years now. That means that the younger vintage is smaller than that of the previous year. The supply of girls decreases year by year. 2. The positive economical development of Thailand. That means more and better paid jobs even for girls from the Isaan and the north. I know her for 20 years now. She welcomed me warmly. Made some small talk. Then I was greeted by the manager lady of Rainbow 2. I know her for 20 years too. She was a gogo girl then in the newly founded Hollywood Rock, today London Calling. Later she worked as mamasan for the Hollywood Group. And now she is the responsible managing director of this bar. This is what I call a career. The line-up of this bar is quite well; the same type of girls as in the other Rainbow Bars: Young, pretty, slim, some of them with nice big boobies, not too big.
