"Yan Chenglong, a 48-year-old amateur from China’s central Henan province, was victorious at the finals of the Chess King tournament in the island province of Hainan on December 17, winning 100,000 yuan (about $13,988), according to state-run tabloid Global Times. He had to forfeit the prize money, along with his victory, following an investigation by the Chinese Xiangqi Association (CXA) into “bad behavior” at his hotel after the tournament, the group said in a statement Monday. etc etc etc" https://edition.cnn.com/2023/12/28/china/chinese-chess-champion-forfeits-victory-intl-hnk/index.html
  3. What I find interesting is that misinformation and hate speech is once again being blamed, as though the people who made such claims and hateful speech were somehow not to blame. Back in the day, you rounded up the people making the misinformation and hate speech and the problem was solved.

  8. House committee defies threats, sticks with plan to visit Thaksin on Jan 12 The House committee on police affairs says it will not call off plans to visit former premier Thaksin Shinawatra at the Police General Hospital despite threats of legal action. Democrat MP Chaichana Detdacho, who chairs the panel, said on Saturday that the Constitution’s Article 129 gives House panels the legal authority to look into such matters. Soon after the panel announced that it was getting ready to meet Thaksin in the flesh on January 12, Chaichana received threats of legal action from several prominent figures. Winyat Chartmontr, Thaksin’s personal lawyer, said in a Facebook post on Thursday that anybody spreading false information about Thaksin may be subject to legal action. In the post, he also said that anybody disclosing Thaksin’s personal information or violating his privacy rights could be subject to legal consequences. Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin echoed the sentiment, saying that any attempts to meet Thaksin without his permission could result in legal action. He also emphasised the need to maintain Thaksin’s privacy regarding his medical condition. Chaichana, meanwhile, said he was not surprised by these warnings, adding that the public was doubtful about Thaksin’s health conditions and whereabouts. “The committee needs to find answers to these questions: Is Thaksin really ill, why is he being granted privileges and will he eventually return to jail?” he said. He added that if the panel is denied access to the suite accommodating Thaksin on the hospital’s 14th floor, then relevant entities like the hospital and the Department of Corrections must address public concerns regarding these questions... https://www.nationthailand.com/thailand/politics/40034066

  11. I saw something interesting: "Never wrestle with a pig, you get covered in dirt and shit, and he likes it..." also one we've all heard: "Don't play chess with a pigeon, he'll just knock over all the pieces and strut up and down, claiming victory, whilst shitting all over the place..." These are brought on, by my viewing of the current situation of Special Counsel's request that the U.S. Supreme Court, consider Trump's claim of absolute Presidential Immunity. This is a "careful what you wish for" moment. If the Supreme Court allows Trump's claim of absolute Presidential Immunity, then Biden could just arrest Trump and throw away the key. Not so wonderful when the other guy does it...

  13. Russian dictator Vladimir Putin seems to have completely lost touch with reality and wants the Russian military to be armed with combat lasers and AI robots, Russian state news agency TASS reported on Dec. 19. “I'm talking about robotic complexes and combat lasers, weapons utilizing artificial intelligence technologies and grounded in new physical principles," Putin said. There's more to the story — the dictator s that there are purportedly already tangible “results” in these sectors, and the supply provision to the Russian occupation forces in Ukraine is showing signs of “improvement”. Despite Putin's optimistic claims, the reality is quite different. Aside from acquiring Iranian drones, the Russian military's achievements have been limited, involving the request for defective shells from North Korea and the importation of golf-cart-like quad bikes from China, used even in assaults. Moreover, Putin's pledge to roll out over 1,000 passenger liners by 2030, requiring the country's aviation industry to assemble two planes daily, speaks volumes about the realism of his ideas. 17. https://www.thaipbsworld.com/the-who-where-and-what-of-thailands-privy-council-as-ex-pm-prayut-becomes-latest-member/ Former Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who stepped down in August after nine years in office, has become the latest member of the Privy Council, as announced in the Royal Gazette on November 29. His appointment, by command of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X), brings the number of Privy Council members to 19 – the limit set by the Constitution. Altogether, 23 people have been named privy councilors during the current reign, including replacements for those who have left office. Membership comes to an end either upon death, resignation, or removal by royal command. The Privy Council serves as the body of advisors to His Majesty the King. It is tasked with “rendering advice to the King on all matters pertaining to his functions on which he may consult, and other duties as stipulated by the Constitution”, the charter states. Selected and appointed by the King, the council is composed of one president and no more than 18 privy councilors. Their office is in the Privy Council Chambers, located at Saranrom Royal Garden near the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Thailand’s first Privy Council – inspired by European monarchies – was established by King Chulalongkorn or Rama V (1853-1910) in May 1874, at a time when the kingdom was called Siam. Duties of councilors Constitutional clauses outline privy councilors’ roles and responsibilities, most of which concern matters surrounding the monarchy. They include the appointment of a regent when necessary, acknowledgement of an heir to the throne, and proclamation of a successor to the throne. Privy councilors also carry out tasks as determined or assigned by the King. These include attending functions or performing duties on behalf of the King or the royal family, along with other duties involving the royal household and royal projects. Councilors cannot be partisan and are prohibited by the Constitution from being affiliated with a political party, being an MP, a senator, a political office holder, a Constitutional Court judge, a member of an independent organization or state enterprise, or even a public official at any agency other than the Royal Household Bureau... ...resisting the urge, to post a link of a photo, of a person on an airport tarmac, in a crop top and tattoos.

  20. Jeeze that's a worry. My current cheap options are Auckland- random destination in China for 11 hour stop over - Vientiane. Someone I know did this route recently and on the way there it wasn't so bad, but the return to NZ was, many excitable Chinese folk shouting at each other up and down the plane, for the whole trip.
