  1. The Legal and justice system reform committee proposes the model of reorganization of the Royal Thai Police Office 1. Dissolution of the human resource executive [This is the internal police committee that overseas promotions in the force. At all levels of the police, large bribes are required to move up in rank.] Dissolution of the OPC (Office of the Police Commission)Establishment of the National Police Affairs Council [comprising the following] – Head of security-related government agency – Head of justice system/judiciary – National Human Rights Committee members – Persons selected by the members of parliament and senators – Citizens who can participate in the appointment and transfer of police officers [as well] [The inclusion of these parties in a committee on police promotions and transfers strikes at the heart of Thaksin and Red Shirt dogma as their plan for reconciliation is that the judiciary and NGOs be stripped of power to intrude into government affairs.] 2. Dissolution of the Royal Thai Police Office [meaning the end of the centralization of all police into a common command] Transfer the following agencies – Forest police to the Forest Department – Railway police to the State Railway of Thailand – Tourist police to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports[At present the police provide security within ministries and other governmental departments, giving them influence and intelligence capabilities throughout the system. The new plan would allow ministries to command their own specialized security forces apart from the centralized law enforcement function of the national police.] Source How could this go wrong?
  2. It would seem it's real and that Sony has decided not to release "The Interview" in response to threats to target theatres that show the movie. 2 thoughts come to mind: Sony genuinely care about their audiences and pulled the movie to prevent any injury to same. This has never bothered the movie makers of films about Iraq or Iran or Afgannystan. The hackers got enough information to destroy Sony - this is more likely IMHO

Then why are they not shaking down the 1.3 million Thais?
  4. And apparently all the mortgages are in US$, which is gonna be increasingly harder to get IMHO
  5. No, I bought when it was on the way up and it promptly crashed, remaining to this day, well below my buy price. The reason the oil price is falling, is that I bought when it was over 100 a barrel, it's been falling ever since. I've sent a letter to Apple offering to refrain from investing in their company if they give me a new iPhone...
  6. Given that they all started as blood letting barbers, I reckon they need quite a bit more practise to be competent
  7. Funny you should say that, there was a reporter interviewing a woman from Russia on TV who was saying she'd had to cancel her holiday in Thailand, can't afford it it seems...
  8. Russia has lost control of its economy and may be forced to impose Soviet-style exchange controls after "shock and awe" action by the central bank failed to stem the collapse of the rouble." The situation is critical," said the central bank's vice-chairman, Sergei Shvetsov. "What is happening is a nightmare that we could not even have imagined a year ago." More... " The Russian people are legendarily stoic in the face of hardships but beware if, and when, their patience runs out,"
  9. Interesting information in this article: Including - he had recently turned towards a radical branch of Sunni Islam, having rejected his adherence to Shia Islam. (Swapped Sides?) - Sydney-based Shi'ite cleric Kamal Mousselmani urged federal agents to launch an investigation into Monis. (Muslims think he was a nutter) In related news, it seems these nutters exist in NZ also, see article. The guys in NZ should be cautious, there's a curious vein of National Loyalty in NZ Gang culture, the Yakuza and the Triads have never been able to gain a foothold, though they've tried. The locals like things as they are, and have been known to 'sort out' people who could increase the police presence or powers.
  10. But there are more born every minute to practise on...
  11. One of the problems with being an open Western Society, is that we allow all sorts of people to be free on the basis of a Judicial system. T'were me I'd shoot most of the people I deemed unworthy of the benefits of society, but then I'd be denying their rights and I'd be a fascist dictator.
  12. After years of perturbation on the stability of the Baht, I've come to one conclusion that seems to explain the stability and also encompass the explanations I've seen, from experts and the lay alike. When the deck chairs get reshuffled in the event that we dare not speak of, the Baht will not be so strongly underpinned and volatility will be the order of the day.
  13. Yeah but this guy was a nutter, he'd have claimed it was a penguin attack if he thought it would get coverage.
  14. Further from Das Radio, a real cleric from Iran, a refugee in Australia, given political asylum, who was on bail for a string of charges. Apparently deeply inconsistent in his views (this from his lawyer), lacking in objectivity and rationality...
  15. " Man Haron Monis, an Iranian refugee and self-styled sheikh known for sending hate mail to the families of Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan and who was charged last year with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife." Listening to Das Radio, this guy was well known and watched, just not closely enough I guess...
  16. If you put your money where your mouth is, took some Nano Silver and went to an Ebola plagued area, demonstrated that this did indeed cure and prevent Ebola, you'd have the world's media by the nipples and get the next twenty Nobel Prizes. Meanwhile back in fantasy land, THE SECRET HISTORY OF MERMAIDS
  17. Well, the long term future of the Muslims has no good outlook, if they can't stop nutters using the religion, as an excuse for terrible acts. The rest of the world will weed them out eventually, much as you weed out rogue individuals and groups from your livestock. I make no apologies for the comparison of radicals and livestock. Indeed I should apologise to livestock, but they wouldn't understand, much like radicals I guess...
  18. "perhaps the husband is the root cause of all this" Now on my third marriage, I can concur with the above statement, the husband is always wrong, though the current missus is the first I've known who has apologised to me, on occasion, when she is wrong. Very unsettling...
  19. It's a question that's often bothered me, why a culture will express dislike and even hatred, for the western way of doing things, but embrace all the western benefits, like cellphones, tvs, police uniforms, guns, automobiles etc.
  20. I guess my experiences are limited to the sky train, no habla representative.
  21. The world's youth, relying on truth by popularity for their education, could be forgiven, after a quick googlie, for thinking Adolph was a performance artist. more...
  22. Generally speaking if a monk comes along I give up my seat, but why don't the Thais? in the same carriage?
  23. and in what some might say, is related news... US deploys first laser cannon for combat At $1 a shot, this may be the first nail in the coffin of the arms industry. The US Navy's first Laser Weapon System (dubbed LaWS) has been mounted on the bridge of the amphibious transport ship USS Ponce and is being used in active duty in the Persian Gulf. It will be used to disable small, fast, attacking boats as well as unmanned and light aircraft. ......... Good video with stirring music at the link
