  1. He should be! He offended a lot of Americans this week.
  2. I don't know what I would do. Never been asked with either phones or computers. ...................... Canadian faces $20k fine, jail time for refusing to unlock phone during airport check A 38-year old Canadian citizen is facing up to a year in jail and a fine of up to 25,000 Canadian dollars for refusing to unlock his cell and thus “obstructing†an in-depth security screening by the border service officials at the Halifax airport. At, of course, RT: http://rt.com/news/238241-canadian-charged-cellphone-passcode/
  3. Soi Cowboy is under Thonglor and Nana is under Lumpini.
  4. This MUST be bullshit in anticipation of Netanyahu dissing Obama...... "The Bethlehem-based news agency Ma’an has cited a Kuwaiti newspaper report Saturday, that US President Barack Obama thwarted an Israeli military attack against Iran's nuclear facilities in 2014 by threatening to shoot down Israeli jets before they could reach their targets in Iran. Following Obama's threat, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was reportedly forced to abort the planned Iran attack. According to Al-Jarida, the Netanyahu government took the decision to strike Iran some time in 2014 soon after Israel had discovered the United States and Iran had been involved in secret talks over Iran’s nuclear program and were about to sign an agreement in that regard behind Israel's back." http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/191966
  5. Slashermac sternly posted.....eyeing his razor sharp bayonet next to his computer.
  6. I've seen on four different sources now that Israeli govt agencies contradict Netanyahu on Iranian nukes. "...between Mossad, Israel's spy agency, and South Africa conceded that Iran was "Not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons.†There it is, in plain English, Netanyahu contradicted by his own intelligence services" http://rt.com/op-edge/235511-netanyahu-warmonger-iran-leakes-nuclear/ I've thought for years that the real threat to Israel would come from drone technology which is getting cheaper and cheaper. Yeah, a politically expedient short term move with disastrous consequences longer term. Especially for the Palestinians.
  7. No public figure in America would dare to say this I think. "The Vatican sought Wednesday to defuse a diplomatic tiff with Mexico after Pope Francis referred to the possible "Mexicanization" of his native Argentina from drug trafficking, the latest instance of Francis' casual speaking style getting him into trouble." http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/vatican-apologizes-mexico-popes-drug-remarks-29207220
  8. A buddy who lives in Pattaya told me that Lucifer was closed as a result of this. Anyone know if this is correct?
  9. If I could go back in time she would be high up on my "to do" list.
  10. This is a comment on the choices NGOs make when they “sacrifice so much†to “help†poor people. Locals aren't ripping anyone off. This is just market economics and nothing more. If willing to pay these amounts to house expatriates near a Nobel Prize name then that is clearly more important than helping poor people I guess. Families on that part of University Avenue have people coming to the door and offering to rent for astronomical amounts. I assume that on the cocktail/fund-raising circuit back in New York or Washington it is cool to say “our Yangon expat is a neighbor of Aung San Suu Kyiâ€. Sounds so connected and plugged in. Personally I would hate to live there as much of the street is almost lakefront and I hate snakes. Worst feeling in the world is walking to the toilet in the dark and stepping on a snake. People from NGOs that are in rural areas I have tremendous respect for. No aircon, sometimes no refrigeration, often harsh living conditions with people that really need and benefit from the help some NGOs provide. The people that are in the NGO brochures and the kind of people we need more of. Not the person renting a house from, most likely, a military family, most likely named on the various sanctions list, at a huge monthly rent that could do a huge amount of good if spent elsewhere, to live near the daughter of another military leader who by both good and bad luck became a symbol. Do you see what I mean? The people being ripped off are probably not the NGOs but the people who donate to certain NGOs.
  11. The housing near her house on University Avenue has has probably had the most rapid rise of any real estate anywhere in the world. NGOs are spending incredible amounts of money to house staff near her house as the “cool†factor of living near Aung San Suu Kyii is huge. Really something to consider when asked to donate to help the poor in some developing country – in some cases houses have recently been leased for well over US$10,000 a month. If you want to help the poor in Myanmar that money could go a long way elsewhere.
  12. Vera Crypt is supposed to be very close but haven't tried it yet. Also free.
  13. ..and proud to say Thailand is Number 1! http://i100.independent.co.uk/article/the-10-most-adulterous-countries-in-the-world--l1krOVB53x
  14. Coss, You were not confusing solidarity or socialism as among educated people, which you clearly are, there is a line. So now that the AUTHORITY ON ALL THINGS has declared that subsidies should not be for bread and transport.....it is just not worth arguing about. I don't know if you were around much during the time frame when Boy was banned. It was like Woodstock around here – filled with peace, brotherly love, good cheer. People cared about one another, offered friendly and helpful advice, met up on a regular basis. Nude hippie girls danced with flowers in their hair while Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane never stopped playing with more sex than Woodstock. This was, without a single doubt, the friendliest board of all Thai boards. Then he came back.... still bitter, still confused. This last year now lashing out at Thais in addition to the years of lashing out at the rest of the board. People leave when he lashes out. I did and know several others who have as well. The freedom of speech here is unique among Thai boards- you can DISAGREE WITH THE BOARD OWNER and it is not taken personally. Try that on other boards. We are completely free to make total asses out of ourselves if we want to! As I don't recall you doing that yourself may I suggest two quick double vodka drinks....then post as you are starting your third.
  15. In this as in so many other threads you are the one who is confused. You are not better than any person on this board. Our lives, like our opinions, also have value and are equal to your life and your opinions. Our opinions are possibly superior to yours in that most on this board have actual experience living in Thailand – something you've never done. In some sick and twisted fucked up way the fact that you consider us lesser humans -still human but a lower human than you - is actually better than what your opinion of Thai people is. Of course that makes me a bully but I've always found racism revolting. Your racism is particularly repulsive and offensive given the elite hiso Thai status you've managed to achieve without the actual inconvenience of living in Thailand.
  16. Very best of luck to you in the future...I think the two most important reasons to move now are ones you gave.
  17. That is a very correct way to put it and well said. Lacking your diplomatic skills I would have used a term like "screwed the EU taxpayers" rather than public debt... People often don't realise how much of foreign aid totals listed for countries are paying off old debts, in many cases decades old, to banks from the country "giving" the aid.
  18. http://www.bocusa.com/portal/Rates?ratesType=2&lang=1& The rates aren't great. Thinking more about the potential for appreciation. China has huge problems. No question.
  19. Title says it all. You think this is a good idea? US citizens in the US can open accounts at Bank of China in New York and hold time deposits in yuan. The usual FDIC insurance applies as this is the US branch of the Chinese gov owned bank. This is a pure bet on the Chinese gov letting the currency strengthen. Would you?
  20. Locating someone is really not at all difficult for lawyers. zzzz put it correctly...if they aren't willing to do the work based on success it might not be worth doing. Asking you to pay upfront says a lot about their confidence in a recovery. Haven't used lawyers in Thailand in years now but it would always start with payment per hour or case...as you say no thanks and prepare to leave some want to charge for a consultation. Maybe half if you aren't referred by someone. So try to get referred by someone. Make it clear from the beginning that you aren't interested in/don't need a consultation. All you want to know is what percentage they want of what is recovered. It will vary from maybe 20% on up to 40%. I would not go more than 25% at the max! Unless you can't find anyone else... The person Mac mentioned above could be just what you need.
  21. Gotta LOVE bellydancers! Not surprising that the Greek see themselves that way. One of the real dangers of a controlled press.
  22. Interesting that this is in the art and culture thread....
