    The Covid-19 thread

I looked at that paper and it doesn't mention medical errors at all! One point the paper makes is, In general, health outcomes improve with time, but this novel viral infection and our early access to a large set of patients provided an opportunity to see rapid improvement. The biggest flaw in your argument is that you are assuming the same death rate for COVID patients without hospital care. Remember that only very sick COVID patients will be admitted to hospital because of the limited supply of beds and medical personnel.

The post Christmas travel in the USA (80+ million) has caused infections to increase greatly. Field hospitals are being constructed and refrigerated trucks for the dead are outside hospitals.

You do realize that the paper I linked to referred to the Johns Hopkins paper. https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/are-medical-errors-really-the-third-most-common-cause-of-death-in-the-u-s-2019-edition/

My prediction for 2021 is that BJ and the Tories will continue to blame the EU for all the UKs problems.

    The Covid-19 thread

Do you have a cite for this? What I see is that accidents (vehicular, falls, drowning, etc.) is the 3rd leading cause of death. https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/are-medical-errors-really-the-third-most-common-cause-of-death-in-the-u-s-2019-edition/ The claim that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the US has always rested on very shaky evidence; yet it’s become common wisdom that is cited as though everyone accepts it. But if estimates of 250,000 to 400,000 deaths due to medical error are way too high, what is the real number? A study published last month suggests that it’s almost certainly a lot lower and has been modestly decreasing since 1990.

    The Covid-19 thread

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-54985981 Since March, a group of volunteers in India's southern state of Kerala have trawled local papers and news networks for reports on deaths due to Covid-19. Led by Dr Arun N Madhavan, a general medicine physician, they checked the district editions of seven local newspapers and followed five news channels unfailingly every day. They took notes on every death reported in the news and obituary notices and diligently entered the details in a spreadsheet. "It's a useful method of counting," says Prabhat Jha, of the University of Toronto, who led India's ambitious Million Death Study, one of the largest studies of premature mortality in the world. As of Thursday night, the volunteers had counted 3,356 deaths from the infection in Kerala, which reported its first Covid-19 case in January and the first casualty in March. But the official death toll from the disease is 1,969. https://www.itv.com/news/2020-12-09/is-indias-covid-19-death-rate-five-times-higher-than-official-figures-suggest With a group of dedicated colleagues he has been monitoring deaths statistics as reported in local newspapers and TV stations, and then comparing them with the official figures. He has concluded there is a massive under reporting of Covid related deaths. Extrapolating across the whole of India he concludes that the real death toll so far is more like 500,000 to 1 million.

The UK has already gotten a worst trade deal with Japan than the EU has with Japan. Another Brexit success!

Those numbers in India are due to lack of testing. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1113465/india-coronavirus-covid-19-tests-cumulative/ India tested over 158 million samples for the coronavirus (COVID-19) as of December 17, 2020. The UK has run 48 million tests. The USA has performed 682 tests per 1000. India has performed 117 tests per 1000. https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-testing In India those that die at home are not tested for Covid,

I suspect India has the most cases and the most deaths from Covid. Literally 100s of millions of people have no access to Covid tests or treatment. The dead outside hospitals aren't tested for Covid.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/alaska-covid-vaccine-allergic-reaction-health-care-worker/ One health care worker in Alaska experienced a serious allergic reaction and was hospitalized after taking Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, state officials said Wednesday. The worker, who is middle-aged and had no previous history of allergies, had stabilized with treatment but was being kept in a Juneau hospital to be monitored for another day. The worker received the vaccine Tuesday at Bartlett Regional Hospital. Ten minutes after taking the vaccine she "showed signs of an anaphylactic reaction, with increased heartbeat, shortness of breath and skin rash and redness," according to Dr. Lindy Jones, the emergency room director at Bartlett. "She was given epinephrine and Benadryl, admitted to the hospital, and put on an intravenous epinephrine drip. Her reaction was serious but not life threatening."

Inadequate testing? Rushed approval ? https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/09/pfizer-covid-vaccine-nhs-extreme-allergy-sufferers-regulators-reaction People with a history of significant allergic reactions should not receive the Covid vaccine, the medicines regulator has said, after two NHS workers experienced symptoms on Wednesday. Both of the NHS staff carry adrenaline autoinjectors, suggesting they have suffered reactions in the past. These devices, of which the best-known brand is the EpiPen, administer a swift adrenaline boost to counter allergic reactions that occur when some people, for instance, eat nuts. The patient information leaflet with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine says it should not be given to people allergic to any substance in the vaccine. “Signs of an allergic reaction may include itchy skin rash, shortness of breath and swelling of the face or tongue,” says the leaflet. The identities of the NHS workers and hospitals where they were vaccinated have not been disclosed. NHS England confirmed the two incidents and said all trusts had now been advised not to give the jab to people with a history of allergic reaction.
