Since March, a group of volunteers in India's southern state of Kerala have trawled local papers and news networks for reports on deaths due to Covid-19.

Led by Dr Arun N Madhavan, a general medicine physician, they checked the district editions of seven local newspapers and followed five news channels unfailingly every day. They took notes on every death reported in the news and obituary notices and diligently entered the details in a spreadsheet. "It's a useful method of counting," says Prabhat Jha, of the University of Toronto, who led India's ambitious Million Death Study, one of the largest studies of premature mortality in the world.

As of Thursday night, the volunteers had counted 3,356 deaths from the infection in Kerala, which reported its first Covid-19 case in January and the first casualty in March. But the official death toll from the disease is 1,969.

With a group of dedicated colleagues he has been monitoring deaths statistics as reported in local newspapers and TV stations, and then comparing them with the official figures.

He has concluded there is a massive under reporting of Covid related deaths.

Extrapolating across the whole of India he concludes that the real death toll so far is more like 500,000 to 1 million.

Getting back to India - Interesting to see a population far higher than USA is frankly doing a better job with 3rd world infrastructure

    USA Pop 331 Million

India Pop 1.389 Billion - yeah that's 1 BILLION more than USA

    USA Cases - 18.5 Million

    India Cases - 10 Million

    USA Deaths - 327,000

    India Deaths - 146,000

    USA Death per 1 Million - 712,000

    India Death per 1 Million - 117,000

Hmmmmmm - well fuck me, I'd prefer to be in a 3rd world shit hole than the USA

Think about those numbers and I'm pretty sure they are close to being measured equitably

Those numbers in India are due to lack of testing.

India tested over 158 million samples for the coronavirus (COVID-19) as of December 17, 2020.

The UK has run 48 million tests.

The USA has performed 682 tests per 1000.

India has performed 117 tests per 1000.

In India those that die at home are not tested for Covid,

One health care worker in Alaska experienced a serious allergic reaction and was hospitalized after taking Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, state officials said Wednesday. The worker, who is middle-aged and had no previous history of allergies, had stabilized with treatment but was being kept in a Juneau hospital to be monitored for another day.

The worker received the vaccine Tuesday at Bartlett Regional Hospital. Ten minutes after taking the vaccine she "showed signs of an anaphylactic reaction, with increased heartbeat, shortness of breath and skin rash and redness," according to Dr. Lindy Jones, the emergency room director at Bartlett. "She was given epinephrine and Benadryl, admitted to the hospital, and put on an intravenous epinephrine drip. Her reaction was serious but not life threatening."

  4. Inadequate testing? Rushed approval ? :hmmm:

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/09/pfizer-covid-vaccine-nhs-extreme-allergy-sufferers-regulators-reaction

People with a history of significant allergic reactions should not receive the Covid vaccine, the medicines regulator has said, after two NHS workers experienced symptoms on Wednesday.

Both of the NHS staff carry adrenaline autoinjectors, suggesting they have suffered reactions in the past. These devices, of which the best-known brand is the EpiPen, administer a swift adrenaline boost to counter allergic reactions that occur when some people, for instance, eat nuts.

The patient information leaflet with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine says it should not be given to people allergic to any substance in the vaccine.

“Signs of an allergic reaction may include itchy skin rash, shortness of breath and swelling of the face or tongue,” says the leaflet.

The identities of the NHS workers and hospitals where they were vaccinated have not been disclosed. NHS England confirmed the two incidents and said all trusts had now been advised not to give the jab to people with a history of allergic reaction.

The United States for the first time reported more than 3,000 Covid-19 deaths on Wednesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

So far on Wednesday, 3,049 have been reported, according to Johns Hopkins. The numbers are not complete for the day.

The United States is averaging about 2,230 new death reports per day, the university's data shows.

Over the course of the pandemic, US health officials have reported 289,298 total deaths.

Predictable since millions of people traveled to family dinners for Thanksgiving holiday about 2 weeks ago. :doah:

Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn't been vaccinated against the coronavirus yet, months after he announced his country's Sputnik V as the "world's first" approved Covid-19 vaccine and said his own daughter had taken it.

The Kremlin said Tuesday that Putin cannot get a vaccine that has not yet finished the final stage of trials, even though the jab has already been given to some Russian frontline health care workers, teachers and several top level officials outside the clinical trials.

"The President cannot use an uncertified vaccine," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during a call with reporters. Peskov did not explain the difference between the vaccine being "certified" and "approved," but said: "Mass vaccination has not started yet. And, of course, the head of state cannot take part in vaccination as a volunteer. It's impossible."

Drugmaker AstraZeneca said Monday that late-stage trials showed its COVID-19 vaccine is highly effective, buoying the prospects of a relatively cheap, easy-to-store product that may become the vaccine of choice for the developing world.

The results are based on an interim analysis of trials in the U.K. and Brazil of a vaccine developed by Oxford University and manufactured by AstraZeneca. No hospitalizations or severe cases of COVID-19 were reported in those receiving the vaccine.

AstraZeneca is the third major drug company to report late-stage data for a potential COVID-19 vaccine as the world waits for scientific breakthroughs that will end a pandemic that has pummeled the world economy and led to 1.4 million deaths. But unlike the others, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine doesn’t have to be stored at freezer temperatures, making it potentially easier to distribute, especially in developing countries.

“I think these are really exciting results,” Dr. Andrew Pollard, chief investigator for the trial, said at a news conference. “Because the vaccine can be stored at fridge temperatures, it can be distributed around the world using the normal immunization distribution system. And so our goal … to make sure that we have a vaccine that was accessible everywhere, I think we’ve actually managed to do that.”

A South Korean soldier tested positive for Covid-19 after returning home from Thailand. The soldier was in Rayong from November 2 to 6 for Cobra Gold, Thailand’s annual military training exercise.

The soldier tested positive during a mandatory screening at a South Korea airport. Thai health officials are investigating the case and are urging residents in Rayong not to panic.

All foreign soldiers involved in the 5-day Cobra Gold training were required to quarantine for 14 days upon entering Thailand and test negative for Covid-19 twice before being released. Health officials speculate the soldier may not have contracted the virus in Thailand. In some cases, the incubation period for Covid-19 is longer than 14 days.

A total of 202 Thai and foreign military authorities participated in Cobra Gold. Foreign participants were from the United States, South Korea, Indonesia, Australia, Singapore, Japan, China and India.

The Public Health Ministry is requiring those who were in close contact with the infected soldier to quarantine for 14 days. Those at the training who did not come in close contact with the soldier are advised to self-quarantine at their homes and look out for any symptoms over the next 2 weeks.

A second group of 147 Chinese tourists holding Special Tourist Visa (STV) arrived in Bangkok on Monday, as Thailand takes small steps to recover its vital tourism industry after it closed borders in March to contain the coronavirus.

Taking CZ3081 by China Southern Airlines, 147 Chinese passengers set out from Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong Province on Monday and arrived in Bangkok on Monday afternoon, becoming the second batch of Chinese tourists after 39 Chinese travelled to the country on October 20.

The tourists are undergoing a 14-day quarantine at designated hotels and will install tracking apps on their smartphones, according to local government requirement.

None of the Chinese have tested positive for COVID-19 and none had a fever.

Most of the arriving Chinese came to visit families or carry out business activities not as sightseers, the Global Times reporter learned.

A woman surnamed Duan from North China's Hebei Province said that she and her child came to visit her husband who is working in Bangkok. "We haven't been together since he returned to work in Bangkok in January," Duan told the Global Times.

She added the application process for the STV is complicated and the flights and hotels are expensive. "But at least I can reunite with my family," Duan said.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday suggested Chinese people try to avoid cross-border travels amid the pandemic. This followed Wednesday's announcement by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism that China will continue the suspension of travel agencies' cross-border group tour services.

Thailand's STV allows tourists from low-risk countries to enter the country and stay for up to 270 days. Thai authorities said China is one of the key countries that STV targets.

According to the Bangkok Post, Thailand plans to provide wellness-orientated state quarantine for foreign visitors coming from low-risk countries, said the Thai Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. "Those in wellness state quarantines can receive Thai massages, spa services and play golf, during a quarantine period which is expected to be reduced from 14 to 10 days," the report said.

Coincidentally - theres been no flu outbreak in NZ this year, some I know, have had mild colds, but only of the sort, you get one day and are gone the next.

The health people, are putting it down to all this hand washing and physical distancing and avoiding the people, as having prevented the flu this year.

Mind you the kids are back at school, so anything that's gonna be spread, will be spreading soon.

But it's late spring/early summer now so we're all out doors, doing those Kiwi things, like rutting in the back paddock.

Plus, essentially no international travel to bring in the flu virus. :drinking:
