    The Covid-19 thread

This is what happens when a healthcare system collapses from COVID-19 cases. https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/06/18/879927134/india-reports-record-spike-in-covid-19-cases-but-nixes-another-nationwide-lockdo India reported a record spike in coronavirus cases Thursday, even as the prime minister ruled out a new nationwide lockdown. With 12,881 new infections registered, it's the first time India's daily tally has exceeded 12,000. For most of this week, only the United States and Brazil have been adding more new cases daily. The Health Ministry confirmed a total of 160,384 active cases Thursday, and 12,237 deaths since the pandemic began — in a population of nearly 1.4 billion. But testing rates are very low. Hospitals in the biggest cities, Mumbai and New Delhi, are overflowing. Social media is flooded with desperate pleas from families searching for COVID-19 tests and hospital beds. Patients, unable to get admitted, have died in parking lots outside clinics and hospitals. India has about one doctor per 1,500 citizens. In rural areas, where two-thirds of Indians live and rely almost solely on government hospitals, the ratio is one doctor to more than 10,000 people. The World Health Organization's standard is one doctor per 1,000 residents. While government hospitals are overcrowded, some of India's elite private clinics are charging up to $950 a day for intensive care with a ventilator. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi rejected media reports that his government is considering another nationwide lockdown, and told a gathering of chief ministers that they should be looking to minimize restrictions in their states. Despite Modi's stance, individual states maintain their own restrictions. The southern state of Tamil Nadu imposed a fresh 12-day lockdown on Monday. Nationwide, schools remain closed and international air travel is halted. Local restrictions on shopping and traffic remain in containment zones — neighborhoods with high concentrations of COVID-19 cases.

Not hard at all! Part of the scientific process is to publish papers so other experts in the field can examine the techniques and results. If flaws are found then the authors are asked for additional information or the paper is retracted. In the case of the Lancet paper, the private company involved in the study would not provide the data so others could verify the results. Now what has happened during this pandemic is a lot of preprint studies have been read by the mass media. This is before the papers have been reviewed and scrutinized by experts. So the possibility of errors is higher in preprints.

  8. I think the VAX11/780 was the last mainframe computer built using TTL standard parts. I learned Dartmouth BASIC on an IBM 370. The system was accessed remotely with a Teletype terminal with a paper tape printer and reader.
  9. Air pollution in China kills more than 500K each year. China is the 2nd largest economy in the world, so its global influence will remain. For example, Australia will remain a colony of China.

That paper is about the design of a COVID-19 vaccine. Here are the conclusions in the paper, We have offered a rationale for the design methodology and the necessary design parameters of a successful and safe vaccine against SARS-CoV-2. It is not included in any of the eight vaccine design routes identified in a recent Nature summary graphic. (Callaway, 2020) We have shown in this paper why a comprehensive analysis of the aetiology of the target virus is prerequisite, not optional. From the HIV experience, we have illustrated the risks of not so doing. Next, we explained why, unlike in conventional vaccine design procedures, the choice of adjuvant is not to be seen as an afterthought but as integral from the beginning. We have deliberately chosen an adjuvant which has been shown to activate the innate and cell-mediated immune responses which are crucial to the successful presentation of the relevant epitopes. We have shown how Biovacc-19 has employed our understanding of the general method of action for infectivity and pathogenicity of the target virus to optimise action and to minimise risk, especially Antibody Dependent Enhancement; and we have presented the Non Human-Like epitopes in the SARS-CoV-2 Spike from which Biovacc-19 has been down-selected.

    The Covid-19 thread

https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/lancet-retracts-surgispheres-study-on-hydroxychloroquine-67613 Two controversial studies of COVID-19 patients have been retracted after the authors failed to demonstrate that the data were reliable. The first study to be retracted, published last month (May 22) in The Lancet, had found harmful effects associated with the antimalarial drug, hydroxychloroquine, but quickly drew fire after scientists raised questions about the massive database supposedly underpinning it, and about that database’s owner, Surgisphere Corporation. ... Hundreds of scientists have raised questions about the provenance of Surgisphere’s dataset. The Scientist reached out to some of the largest health systems in the states hit hardest by COVID-19, but could not find any that contributed data to Surgisphere, and the company has declined to name any participants, citing privacy agreements. Several institutions once listed as collaborators on Surgisphere’s website, including the University of Minnesota and Stanford University, tell The Scientist they have no record of anyone at their institutions working with Surgisphere. The mentions of the collaborations have since been removed from Surgisphere’s website.

  19. Beware Malware Associated with Fake Thai Chana Check-in/Check-out System There have been reports of fake Thai Chana sites that will ask you to download their apps. The apps containing malware pretending to be the Thai Chana domain include thaichana.pro, thai-chana.asia, and thaichana.asia. Please note the fake sites may send links via SMS to your smartphone number taken from a sign-in sheet at an entry point that you may have completed instead of using the QR system. Users should NEVER click on a link to a site purporting to be the Thai Chana check-in/check-out system. The real Thai Chana domain names used to check-in and check-out at venues in Thailand are www.ไทยชนะ.com or www.thaichana.com. Please note: NO apps are required to use this website. Users may wish to consider using a general voice only telephone (landline – 02 prefix) number when completing a sign-in sheet that would allow authorities to reach you via this voice line for contact tracing purposes. https://www.osac.gov/Content/Report/4d67f4ba-d0c4-4f89-bb92-18c90309155f

It is a gray area, because it affects gray matter. Too low O2 levels leads to the brain cells dying.
