  1. sir mekong - thank you. yeah and she was 100% correct. i like to think i learned more than the average schmuck while here a year butless than anyone actually dedicated. unless they're incredibly stupid - but what are you gonna do? so i tell my friends DO NOT think you're smarter than the thais --- it's an easy trap but not accurate - they have their own style. OTOH - in some ways their style is total bullshit - so go ahead and fucking stick with what you know. i also tell my friends being here is LITERALLY like being in a gay bar for straight people. now i don't know if you've been in a gay bar - but i've been in plenty (used to work at Disney - the studio - go figure - and like every dude in my dept was gay except me - and they were all pretty cool - but these dudes were like mongers - and i thought somewhere hmmmmmm - there's actually more similarity between gay men and straight men in thailand than straight married men and dudes who fuck around (Me - guilty as charged - i'm fucking having sex like 2 or 3 times a day while here - and enjoying it.... a lot). anyhooo... forgot what the fucking point is. so be it. i think the point is - i need some fucking sleep. fuck the rest na.
  2. I am now hijacking this thread for future use. Consider yourself warned.
  3. Permit me a little randomness. So fucking tired right now, slight hangover. Flight got in around 1030pm last night - guy at immigration actually gave me a hard time, saw all the stamps from when I was here on ED Visa and I think he was thinking I was a Visa Runner - just a mean old dude. He went through every single page of my passport before he stamped. Luggage slight delay - and then got bombed at the taxi queue - just a ton of arrivals for Songkran. But I was too tired to care haha. This is a shite picture of the queue - but if you can make it out the line goes on for about hmmm, let's say FOREVER in one direction and then raps around to come back. I was just too damn exhausted from 2 days sans sleep to seek an alternate means. Finally check in to hotel and it's a little before 1am, considered sleeping -- god knows i needed to - even took an advil PM - alas, no effect. What's a poor man to do??? So I went out and hit Bangkok Beat then Climax - both were crowded but not capacity (like a couple years ago). Started hooking up with this girl in Climax but it was one of those things where she looked great from across the table but up close just too much perfume and make up, I don't know whatever - got the feeling she was one of the hawks from the biergarten in new clothes seeking new prey. so I plotted my escape, retreated along the lines of egress towards home feeling the effects of alcohol, exhaustion and a sleep aid taking their toll. and yet.... i ended up at HIllary 2. How the fuck did that happen???? Hooked up with some cool ass chick there, and about two minutes ago I just made up a story that I had to go meet a friend because he lost his ATM blah blah blah, otherwise I don't think she was planning on leaving. NOW I REALLY GOTTA GET SOME FUCKING SLEEP and then drag my tired ass out to get a SIM and a water pistol. This year at Songkran - I'm fighting back. DIE MOTHERFUCKERS! oh, sorry - i get a little emotional at songkran. Point is we're all creatures of habit. At least you're here. Or were here. Hey Flash some girl called me a kii beua last night and said i have the attention span of something i couldn't understand. I think she was irritated. But what is a kii beua?
  4. Ps. Best explanation of chess to non-players I've ever seen. Not being sarcastic. *edit - youtube won't allow any version of this scene to be embedded (viewed on another site) - but worth a look if you have a moment. It's a clip from "The Wire".
  5. But - how's her connect 4? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59RSLhdGWQM
  6. Dear sir, I would like to put forth the proposition that those two things are not necessarily mutually exclusive, depending.
  7. So we got Drummond running these exposes on ENORMOUS extortion and boiler room rackets -- and I'm sure that most of us have inadvertently interacted with these folks if nothing more than passing by on the street. Must be Chinese right...? Nope. All Falang. Then sociopaths like the "Mad Yank" playing slice and dice with his dates. He's Chinese and the Yank moniker is just a nickname right??? Nope - he's an American. Well shit these heinous Chinese are all over the news - they must've done something really fucking awful, yeah? Oh yeah - they most certainly did. They washed their feet in the sink. They went out of queue and rushed lines. They allowed their little kids to shit and piss in public. Fucking hell - what horrible people. This is nothing less than the end of times. Somebody ought to rename this forum the old lady boo hoo bitch about chinese board for drama queens. My man Shakespeare summed it up so perfectly.... Much. Fucking. Ado. About........ nada.
  8. The beautiful thing about Jack, he keeps it raw and real and isn't shy about shining the same critical lens he views the world in on himself. He brings it. I've never met the guy or had a conversation with him, but I personally find it a relief to read someone with a little passion still coursing through their veins. Who... has the rare ability to articulate it. Thank fucking god.
  9. Marriage is a societal construct to give stability, and to some extent it does - or is necessary. Still, committing to stay with a partner and live together until death is no easy thing. For some it's worthwhile, for many it's not the best recipe for a meaningful existence.
  10. what's the fuss? first thing on arrival you simply [removed - JR]. or you could [removed - JR], which will ultimately culminate in [removed - JR]. done. resolution. unless of course [removed - JR] in response to your [removed - JR] which would unfortunately lead to [removed - JR]. got it?
  11. It's out of the question for the near future (it probably was anyway - at least now the actual cards are on the table where you can see them). I'm not as critical of Israel as most of my peers but this is kind of an ill omen of where things are heading. The ties between Israel and the US right wing and evangelicals becomes stronger at the cost of alienating moderates. When I took a couple classes at UCLA in 2001 almost everyone tacitly supported Israel and saw them as noble folks fighting for survival. Now you go on campus and the perception is a lot more cynical and critical. It definitely sucks for the people living in Palestine and the West Bank. It's still a little taboo to show empathy for these folks as people will accuse you of supporting terrorism, but on either coast that is also changing.
  12. Ahhhh. aaaargh. aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrgh. ... after doing a little research... alright. Something I swore I would never do - bought one of the Burdett books. fuck me, this is the decline. === Order Received - March 14, 2015 12:42 PM Bangkok 8: A Royal Thai Detective Novel (1) Burdett, John Condition: Used - Very Good - A well-cared-for item that has seen limited use but remains in great condition. The item is complete, unmarked, and undamaged, but may show some limited signs of wear. Item works perfectly. ==== Interesting that the book was initially published in '91. This is back up in case I simply can't bear reading Burdett. ==== Items Ordered March 14, 2015 12:42 PM Kicking Dogs [Kindle Edition] By: Collin Piprell ==== Dear sir, why do you think I come here? 555. Have couple friends to connect with but have a sneaking suspicion that I'd be politely making up a reason to excuse myself if I ever was around many of these folks in person (and the opposite is likely true). It's good to see how people think outside of one's own circle or environment. btw - I like reading your input on the language and culture peculiarities. Sorry about that mate, just was seeking some loose and fast input before I made a purchase. If I have any feedback after reading will put it over there. Since I'm lazy I went ahead and watched "get shorty" while I was stuck in a hotel the past few days for work. Never watched it before as... I don't know - didn't think I would be interested. Must admit I was pleasantly surprised, steady stream of chuckles and clever twists. First time I read it was for a journalism course at Indiana University. Thompson's trajectory from romanticizing the Angels initially to seeing them as pathetic and brutal had an impact on me -- in a good way. It's nothing like Fear and Loathing (which I thought was overrated), Hells Angels A Strange & Terrible Saga is my favorite Thompson book by far. Thanks for the input all.
  13. kind overdosed on reading dawkins, feynman, hawking (along with different analyses of said authors) over the last several months and i find myself craving some fucking pure unadulterated pulp. just b-movie type silliness but enjoyable. preferably set in thailand. aware of john burdett, christopher moore, dean barrett, etc. but never read them --> i'm just going to pick a single book and read it -- and don't want to dick around with something that takes itself too serious. sex, violence, intrigue, backstabbing, corny dialog and cheesy stereotypical characters will be perfect. suggestion anyone?
  14. thank you for posting this sir stickman esquire. you should reconsider your move -- don't get me wrong, i'm all about reinventing yourself, but what you've done in thailand is impressive. leave your options open. regardless thank you.
  15. It's all good Flash. You've been through a hell of a lot more in this life than I have. Especially in SE Asia. I gotta chill my own loose cannon ways before i get myself into trouble. So I can say this - whatever is going on in reference to the struggle for power, at least there hasn't been overt violence/killing. Gotta give the Thais credit for that. Yep. Ps. Can I recommend Hong Thong? *peace*
  16. You have a severe mechanism for keeping things down to earth -- battering yourself with criticism. But you do it with grace and humor. It's kind of a rare style one doesn't see often (I don't know him at all but I think Coss exhibits something similar at times). Making jokes at your own expense. I'm about a decade or so behind you and at a place where it just crept under my skin that life is finite, it IS going to end. And it keeps nagging at me. Hence I find myself restless and taking trips for no other purpose than to shake up routine. Or something, fuck I don't know. Let me think about this a little...
  17. I guess Flash hasn't been following - "Pornpimol Kanchanalak" is a convicted felon in the US (attempted bribery and violation of campaign finance laws)... and a known paid shill. I also love the post about not even reading Bandow but already knowing he's full of shit since he's critical of Thailand's joyful military dictatorship. Obviously foreigners can't understand, they have no right to express anything but a complimentary portrait of the junta, only Thais can be critical -- of course the rub there is if a Thai is critical, they go to jail. Bummer. If you read the piece by Bandow it's pretty darn mild, and he's a straight-laced under stated conservative. Ms. Pornpimol could've at least targeted someone a little more obnoxious to gain credibility. That's two articles in a row for you Flash with dubious sources. Ease up on the Sangsom. ============ From other sites (in reference to the author above): April 21, 2001 | From Associated Press A Thai businesswoman charged with campaign finance violations was sentenced Friday to three years of probation and six months of house arrest and was ordered to pay a $3,000 fine, the Justice Department said. Pauline Kanchanalak (aka Pornpimol Kanchanalak) pleaded guilty in June to making illegal contributions of more than $690,000 to Democrats in return for access to former President Clinton and other officials. ---- United States of America, Appellant v. Pornpimol Kanchanalak a/k/a Pornpimol Parichattkal, and Duangnet Georgie Kronenberg,Appellees Consolidated with No. 99-3034 Appeals from the United States District Court for the District of Columbia (No. 98cr00241) Jonathan Biran, Attorney, United States Department of Justice, argued the cause and was on the briefs for appellant. Eric L. Yaffe, Attorney, entered an appearance. Reid H. Weingarten argued the cause for appellees. Withchim on the brief were Erik L. Kitchen, Brian M. Heberlig, and James Hamilton. Michael Spafford entered an appearance. Before: Wald, Silberman and Tatel, Circuit Judges. Opinion for the Court filed by Circuit Judge Wald. Wald, Circuit Judge: The government charged Pornpimolc"Pauline" Kanchanalak (aka Pornpimol Parichattkal) and Duangnet "Georgie" Kronenberg with a scheme to disguise illegal hard money contributions and soft money donations from foreign nationals and corporations to national and state political committees. Defendants were also alleged to have caused political committees to file reports with the Federal Election Commission ("FEC") falsely identifying lawful permanent residents as the source of funds that actually originated with foreign nationals and corporations in violation of 18 U.S.C. ss 2 (cool.png, 1001. The government argued that s 441e of the Federal Election Campaign Act ("FECA") prohibits any infusion of money from foreign nationals into federal, state, and local elections and that section 104.8 of the FEC regulations requires that political committees report the true source of their contributions and donations. Defendants asserted that as to both hard and soft money, political committees were not required to report the true sources of their receipts, and as to soft money, FECA did not restrict such donations by foreign nationals
  18. Was kinda waiting to see the response to this. These reports of yours are probably my favorite reads on any thai forum anywhere. You have a talent writing - shame this doesn't reach a wider audience. Thank you for taking the time to put it down. Curious about your fascination with the rainbow bars -- I'm usually falling asleep after a drink or two in those establishments.... and moving on. 5555
  19. note: tangential to this topic, Israel has aligned itself more and more with the right wing in the US, especially evangelical christians. While politically expedient in the short term - this is bad move in the long run. And in the big picture I personally support Israel -- certainly their right to exist and thrive - but not how they've managed their relationship with Palestine and the West Bank -- and not their more shady foreign policy moves.
  20. Yeah I picked up on that too. For Thais kicking something with your foot is worse than spitting on it - and that's not an exaggeration. This guy's an idiot. They're everywhere. They must have some super gene that allows them to keep reproducing in defiance of Darwin.
  21. Hmmmm, No doubt that media portray most 'feel good' events without an in depth critical analysis of everyone involved. I'm sure the protective ring event probably was exaggerated to make a point. But it also strikes me that the author of this piece has his own agenda also (looking at his body of work and that website -- militant right wing and pro Israel - eg, "Obama loves Islam," "Abolish the UN"). I'm leery of people who want to stoke a religious war -- it's pointless. (note: I'm not for politically correct assholes who refuse to criticize Isam either). It just strikes me that "war with Islam" gives extremists exactly what they want. If, hypothetically, you get a majority of people to believe they are at war with the whole religion and this enormous chunk of the world -- well guess what -- the Bin Ladens win... that is exactly what they are trying to achieve. Game fucking over. The Moslems (or muslims - i spell it both ways, not sure which is correct) I work with at my hospital -- and I don't share what I perceive as their suffocating controls on sex, art, drinking, etc. -- are, past our differences, pretty thoughtful and warm people who are fucking horrified by the rise of violent extremists, and even ashamed. Some are my friends. Gotta figure out a way to combat Islamic violent extremists without getting stupid and going after an entire religion. Like say, the whole country of Indonesia. Absurd.
  22. Saw this on NPR yesterday and felt a little melancholy. Rolling up on 50 years old and just about to complete riding his bike around the globe to set a world record. That's kinda bad ass at any age. Struck down in front of his family. Rest in peace sir.
  23. Yeah it is. It's a sign of hope(?) that (some) people within the religion are placing focus on other avenues of expression.
