  1. Re: site security certificate

I think I may have solved the "this site is not fully secure" messages by specifying that graphics should also be sent (encrypted) over https.

There was a time when we were conservative in using https since it made things slower and more complex.  Who cares if some random JPEG is encrypted?  But the "https everywhere" campaign has forced a solution to most of the problems.

Please let me know if you still see alarmist messages about site security.

FWIW, the site has been using https and SSL for years- given the potentially sensitive nature of some posts. The physical server that is used is located in the US, at an AWS facility that has big-time physical and network security.

  2. I originally thought NP mgmt would be eager for the domain name, but have had little luck in finding anyone with an interest.

I'm currently thinking I might, when tourist traffic returns, start an info site on nanaplaza.com, and maybe pay some freelancers to write articles.  There could be a whole new generation of mongers showing up that could use our sage wisdom 😉

  3. Responding to a long-dormant thread.

The name change was made because the ad system we used to generate a little revenue objected to the politically incorrect Nanaplaza activities, and some threat that the govt might block us.

At this point nanaplaza.com is still dormant; I'm open to suggestions how it might get used.

  4. Welcome back, think_too_mutt!  It is a quieter board these days, alas...

As you suggest with the mention of Thai history, a thing I enjoyed about the board in the early days was the wide range of interests beyond just nightlife. Both the Bangkok expat scene and the board membership have evolved, though.

Along with the personal histories of all the members, this board has been around long enough to have a little history as well. 😉

I forget just which political peregrination brought forth a crackdown on websites that talk about the nightlife, and we felt it necessary to dissociate with the nanaplaza.com domain. And there was a time when I thought it would get sold to the "new management" at NP- but "negotiations were not successful"

We've had some discussions about the future of the board, and I'm open to suggestions whether to put it to rest, change it, add new features, or even change the name back.

I've always thought nananplaza.com would do well as more of a business directory with reviews, etc, but it would take someone on the ground there to keep the info current.

  5. Whether Thalidomide is a good example, the more important point is that in the intense rush to put out a vaccine, the testing process will no doubt be cut as short as possible.

The usual development cycle of something as complex as a vaccine is on the order of ten years.  Now we have dozens of organizations around the world under intense pressure to get one out ASAP.  People are desperate- we all want relief from this pandemic.  So I suspect the actual testing of the new drug will be by billions of people.

There are probably a dozen huge companies around the world going at this 7x24, and soon they will be releasing product.  Which one will you take?  The one tested for 30 days or 90 days?

  6. I'd love to know the back-story to this: does she have a clue?  Maybe she chose it cause the curly letters look cute?

Or did the tattoo artist do it for a laugh?  Or to pay her back for being annoying?

Her name is Barbara, so she insisted on a transliteration!

  7. The latest iteration of the new server seems to be running smoothly, so I put it into production. With any luck it will run steadily; meanwhile the upgraded Nagios monitoring system will be watching closely.

If anyone sees problems, do let me know.

  8. As some of you may know, I upgraded the server that runs thai360.com a few days ago.

This supposedly-improved server has proved balky and stubborn, with the database crashing at regular intervals. I spent a bunch of time tonight working on it- but had to give up and go back to the original server for the moment, which is where I'm posting this.

With any luck, I'll get the new setup working shortly, and will move everything back there. If not,

I'll be picking up the few days of posts that may be missing here and get everything synced up.

    Apologies for any inconvenience....

  9. Hi,

"which came therefore out of her wages"

This annoys me. Staff likely make pretty much fuck all anyway, and then management makes them responsible for losses incurred due to people not paying.

    Sanuk!

Agreed. But, OTOH if you're mgmt, you have to have some ways to motivate the servers to pay attention to customers and not lose checks.

A smart manager will announce this policy, insist it is strictly enforced, and then be very generous with exceptions ;-)
