This story fails the sniff test to me. Luxury cars - stolen in the UK? This would make the owner a bit angry, or at least sad. Would have an effect on his insurance I'm sure. I don't even buy the explanation - who is going to get a loan for something like this? Would put yourself in a major investigation I would think. If you could afford/get approved for a loan like this - you probably are not going to be part of this type of scheme. The insurance company would not just pay out a big amount and not have a little bit of wonder how to get the car back, or find out what happened to the car and try to get some compensations - or are the UK owners and insurance companies flush with so much money now? Now however, trying to import cars to Thailand is a known "mafia" like occupation. Just try to import a used high performance car - try to find a way to import it legally (even if you wanted to). The linkage between buyers, agents and customs officers must be pretty close.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing. Not about the trial/conviction - but about the length of time. I would much rather give them a chance to get a reduced sentence in return for telling the story of how they worked the corruption - in detail. Corruption at a much bigger scale continues to happen, and even when in the very few cases the people are caught, tried and convicted - there are limited cases where they tell the story. Former PM Thaksin was going to get rid of corruption from the government - anyone who got caught with corrupt "receipts" would get the book thrown at them! Final thought - the two Americans who gave the bribe only got 6 months in prison.
