  1. God is man's creation, not the other way around. According to Steven Hawkins, all this just happened from nothing with no intervention from God. I believe it.
  2. A new car is something not even middle America can afford now. http://www.usatoday....fford/17730223/
  3. On time I had a hotel room number 666 in Trinidad. When I got it, I thought maybe the meaning of the symbol was not well known in Trinidad for them to assign a room with that number. I'm not superstitious so it didn't bother me - much. But when I called room service and gave them my room number, the response on the other end was, 'THAT'S THE SIGN OF THE DEVIL!' I have not been back to the hotel, or the country for that matter, since.
  4. Thai Airline rules are that you are allowed two carry on bags. I haven't had any problems w/ two carry on bags on my last few trips to LOS via the trans-Pacific route. It's kind of hard to argue with a gate agent (I could note his name and complain later) but I'm hoping they will let me through. I've had problems w/ bags damaged and arriving late when checked. This just goes to show you how vulnerable you are when traveling. I remember one time an old guy, traveling alone, had a hearing disorder and couldn't hear the announcement in the boarding area. He had a major problem and eventually one of the airline employess had to assist. Life is hard, more so if you are a lone adisabled traveler.
  5. I'll be flying Thai Airways on the Frangfurt - BKK leg of the trip next month. Looking at their website, THAi allows two bags for carryon; and the limit is 7 kg (maximum length 22 inches, width 18 inches, thickness 10 inches) for the first bag and 1.5 kg (maximum length 15 inches, width 10 inches, depth 15 inches, or the total of three dimensions do not exceed 30 inches) for the personal item bag. I decided this time to take my smartphone with wifi instead of a laptop to save space in my two carryons. I travel light for trips like this, to avoid checking baggage.
  6. When I was there for a year in the 60's, I got lucky and was shacked up w/ a German babe who had spent 2- 3 yrs in California where her parents lived. She spoke English better than I. We had great times together. The food and sekt were great. I never did learn much German (other than the cuss words). I've been back a few times since then when I traveled around Europe.
  7. In the late 60's, I was stationed near Frankfurt for about a year, in a town called Hanau. I had some great times there.
  8. I made a reservation for arrival in early Nov. for a couple of wks stay. This time I'm flying trans-Atlantic (from east coast USA). My past trips to LOS had been all trans-Pacific. I was surprised to find that taking the Atlantic route costs the same number of FF points on UAL, takes less time by about 2 hours, and only one stopover in Frankfurt (usually 2 stopovers for Pacific routes).

    Coriander

On time, my wife mistook the stuff for parsley and sprinkled some, chopped up, on deviled eggs. That is a definite NO NO. NEVER use silantro (another name for coriander leaves) on deviled eggs. It has been on my never use for anything list ever since.
  10. Lowell, Massachusetts. University of Massachusetts at Lowell is there now. When I was there in the 70's, it was called Lowell Tech. It was an old mill town still trying to get over the Great Depression of the 30's.
  11. In the early 70's, Dionne Warwick came to a small, hick, armpit of america town called Lowell. I was there in college at the time during some of the worst yrs of my life. She gave a one night stand concert in the school gym. It was reported in the news that she brought the house down that night. Years later, they were asking her about the best audience she has ever performed for and she said that that one night stand in Lowell was the best. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=dDblF-J6qvY
  12. I've gotten the invalid key messages on several of my computers after a reinstall of the OS. I've given up on Microsoft and have been switching over to Ubuntu.

  14. We're in a different world.... my thing at the moment is RAISE BED GARDEN. I have to pick up some concrete blocks from Home Depot and move sifted dirt into a 4' x 8' raised bed garden made from 8" x 8 " x 16" concrete blocks....[this is not to say that I will not be back in LOS in a few months' punting in the back sois of Pattaya ] .
  15. I was reading a piece that said something to effect that if Britain were a State in USA, it would be the poorest State in USA next to Alabama. This explains the state of Britain today. If you look at Britain in this light, it is not surprising that Scotland wants to secede.
  16. I'm surprised this succession thing is even taking place. In the 1800's, the South wanted to do just that in USA and more than half a million people died in the Civil War. What is different now? Nobody wants to fight. Fighting for one's country is passe?
  17. Double Indemnity -- an old classic-- I had trouble accepting Fred McMurray and Barbara Stanwick as lovers in leading roles but the screen play is remarkable.

    Annual Check Up

This medical mistake cost me a few hundred dollars in time and money, not enough to cause me to sue.

    Annual Check Up

My health is good so it had been a few yrs since a physical. The doc I had didn't repeat the test until I told him about all the normal tests readings I was getting from my tests using meters available on the internet. The guy was fired -- by me, that is. He had his own lab setup in his practice. I complained about it to the State but they are so used to docs making mistakes that it was not an issue. [Everybody makes mistakes, docs included. If you don't like it, sue.]

    Annual Check Up

Sometimes it is better to avoid medical school hospitals. Once a trainee nurse in one had a hard time finding a vein in my arm for a blood sample, and it was torture. During my last physical, the blood sample got mixed up and I was told I had extremely high cholesterol and blood glucose levels. The doc even prescribed meds for the conditions. I have no history of such conditions so I started monitoring my glucose and cholesterol levels and they were all normal using meters readily available. Eventually, it was determined that the lab made a mistake. In USA, where I live, medical mistakes are significant enough that I try to avoid docs as much as possible.
  21. 12 Angry Men and Witness for the Prosecution -- a couple of great classics.
  22. Yrs ago. in basic training (US Army), I'm standing in front of a range instructor with a live hand grenade in my hand. His job is to make sure I throw the grenade safely. I pull the pin and throw the damned thing but it slides off the side of my hand and in the direction of the...Company Commander...nobody got hurt... but shit happens.
  23. Years ago, in high school, there used to be a guy who sat in front of me in class. His name was Paul Delaney. The teacher was a old skinny woman with a wrinkled face who used to sit on a student's disk up front and carry on an extended monologue. She had the respect of all students in that class except Paul Delaney. In the middle of her monologue, he would say out loud, "PRUNE FACE...PRUNE FACE..." .... She would pretend like she didn't hear him and continue with her monologue....
  24. I tried a couple of times to watch this movie on Netflix but I just can't get passed the first 30 minutes... . I recently subscribed to Netflix and am watching a lot more movies now.
