Is that doing more harm than good? That is the gray area it seems.

    The Covid-19 thread

A breathing machine requires having a tube in your throat; and, because of this, additional procedures are required before you can talk or eat (not to mention the gagging problem). It’s not clear that a breathing machine can be more effective than a Oxygen nasal cannula when a Covid patient is able to breathe on his own.

    The Covid-19 thread

For Covid patients, it looks like they are put on ventilators even though they CAN breathe on their own. The problem is they are not getting enough oxygen when they are breathing. A ventilator is such a case may do more harm.

    The Covid-19 thread

A newscaster doctor was hospitalized recently for Covid. He said he opted not to use the ventilator. Apparently, once you get on the ventilator, your chance of survival is just 10 %. What would you do if you are on Oxygen with Covid and they tell you that the Oxygen is not enough to keep you alive so you should switch to a ventilator? The newscaster doctor opted not to switch and lived

That post is about UTILIZATION of available resources to fight COVID-19. I said the hospital ship had less than 10 % use at most and the hospital emergency room waiting room was empty (0% utilization) while the camera crew was there. You responded about morgue tents and people coming from all over to help but you didn't mention how these resources were used if at all. Were the morgue tents empty the whole time? Did the people that came from all over do anything useful? You missed the gist.

You missed the gist of my post. Hopefully, you will get it right.
  9. Pick the lesser of two evils. But that may not be easy. During the last election, both Clinton and Trump looked equally bad to me. I just read a report that said Trump is perceived to be better at handing the current crises. https://www.yahoo.com/news/bidens-edge-evaporates-trump-seen-000336671.html

    The Covid-19 thread

Trump eventually allowed Covid patients on that ship but still very few showed up. The point is that there were concerns that the health care system would be overwhelmed but it doesn’t look that way. I just watched the news where a camera crew goes into the emergency room of a major hospital. The waiting area is empty. I guess people avoided that area like it was the epicenter of a pandemic.
  11. Wikipedia has detailed plots of every movie ever made, a motherload of "spoilers." They don't have "spoiler alerts" by the way. I used to belong to a forum that used to prohibit "spoilers" but it stopped that because discussions are better that way. If you are concerned about spoilers, my advice to you is stay away from reviews.

    The Covid-19 thread

About 3 million people died in US last year, about 8,000 people per day on average. Covid-19 has been killing 1,000 people per day lately – approximately 12% of the last year’s average number. It seems that the healthcare system would be able to handle a 12% increase. At the height of the pandemic in NYC, President Trump sent a hospital ship to lessen the load there, but the ship soon left because it sat empty most of the time and was at most 10% of capacity.

According to this forecast, the world reached its peak COVID-19 cases in mid-April; the cases are now declining; and 99% of cases in the world will end by mid-June. COVID-19 looks short-lived based on this forecast. But who knows what the future will bring.
  14. Netflix movie, #1 in USA, called “Extraction.” It’s a real tear jerker with a classic cathartic moment when the hero dies, then a nice denouement.

The authorities there believe that COVID will be around a long time — it’s the new normal for them. It wouldn’t be practicable to shut everything down for long time.

I read somewhere that social distancing is voluntary in Sweden. It’s a new social experiment for them, trying to go about their business as usual. As expected, Sweden has more COVID deaths than their neighbors but deaths are << 1% of the population, albeit in the thousands. The authorities do not believe it’s worth the draconian measures taken by most other countries because of the very small fraction of population becoming incapacitated by COVID,

Your numbers may be based on people who show symptoms, not the whole population. Here is the linK: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-COVID19-NPI-modelling-16-03-2020.pdf A respected London's Imperial College COVID-19 Response Team estimates that about one to two million will die in US from the coronavirus. So this is seen to be much worse than the seasonal flu.https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/17/healt...udy/index.html

    The Covid-19 thread

US Population in 1918 was about a third of today's. In percentage terms, about 0.7 % of the population died in the pandemic of 1918 and 0.3 % to 0.6 % are estimated to die from the Coronavirus. An average American has a 99+ percent chance of surviving this pandemic per estimate. With odds like that, I shouldn't be too concerned, right? A million deaths from this virus, however, could overwhelm the healthcare system and compromise social order.

    The Covid-19 thread

It’s been estimated by a respected COVID-19 team that about 1-2 million will die in the US from this virus, even more than the pandemic of 1918 that killed about 675,000.

Wow. That is amazing. I was thinking it would be more like 50,000 - 100,000 deaths based on a CDC estimate of 300,000 - 600,000 deaths worldwide this season. They could be fake numbers. Unbelievable.

Do you have a link for that 30? It’s highly unlikely that only 30 people in China died from the seasonal flu.

It looks like China already has this virus under control. Yesterday they reported no new cases, just 3-4 months since this started. They lost a lot more people to the seasonal flu.

    The Covid-19 thread

Life could be depressing for a while with the Coronavirus. In a corner of my basement, I had stashed some whole grain wheat (cases packed in Nitrogen) to be used during pandemic, zombie apocalypse, nuclear war, etc. The problem is that the stuff has been there ~ 40 years, since the Carter administration. But I opened up a can and, to my surprise, it is still good after all that time! Hopefully, this pandemic is short lived.

Some scientists have said the anti-malaria drug chloroquine could be a treatment for the coronavirus.
