1st week in Korea

I arrived here 7 days ago and it was a bg culture shock, even though I have been travelling through Asia for the last 10 years. The first thing that struck me was how orderly and neat the place is. I am living in one of the sattelite cities around Seoul, known as a bed town, the workers around here work in the city and travel 45mins to an hour home on the subway. I am fortunate as my workplace is literally a minute's walk from my appartment, so no commute.

 

The job is better than I expected and I have taken to teaching quite well. Having said that my compatriates tell me I will re-asses that in a few weeks. However I want for nothing and can live quite cheaply while still enjoying 2-3 nights out a week. And there is money left over after all that.

 

The nightlife here revolves around one expat bar, which I suppose is a bit like gulliver's for you Bkk-based guys. I went out my first 4 nights and got wasted on good cheap beer. Now the full work week is in swing though I tend to stick to tonic water and a few games of pool. I have also joined the local fitness centre which is a great spot for eyeing off the local talent.

 

Sunday afternoon I was escorted around Seoul by another local teacher, starting off in the notorious Itaewon. We walked up hooker hill and I must say I wasnt really impressed. One local guy has filled me in on the barber-shop scene, but I figure with all the nice looking young ladies and P4P being outrageously expensive, that good girls will be my thing!

 

And speaking of the women, they are gorgeous, pale skin, fine features and nice skin. The receptionist at my work who I thought was a 27 yo hottie infact has 3 kids, the oldest who is 15! I have a few dates lined up, but I am still learning the ropes and am treading carefully. I inadvertantly asked out the mistress of a Korean friend the other night, without understanding the situation. I am keen not to piss him off.

 

I'll keep you all informed as I get to know the place better. I am planning a night out in Itaewon soon, which should make for a good report. Until then, take care.

Glad to read that you like it over there. Just one recommendation: before dating a girl make sure you eat enough kimchi and garlic food, otherwise her breath may be a turn-off. ::

I'm a pretty big fan of garlic and kimchi already, my kitchen is well stocked with both. I am actually seeing a western girl at the moment, , as they are kind of exotic to me, what with the last 4 gfs being Indonesians. Having said that thought, the talent here is out of this world, not a day goes by when I dont walk down the street like a slack jawed oaf. I will get around to doing the Korean thing soon, I hope, as most of the teachers I have met have had some experience with GKGs. I am off to Osaka in a few weeks, do you have some tips for me there?

The kim chee is just a warm up its the corollary made from daikon radish that kills you Gok t'gee. They like to take a crunchy spoon full of it in the morning mixed it up with a lump of dried krill and then wash it down with some coffee and then "okay kisses I am off to work." It won't be long before you figure out that you have to be the first out of bed the first in the shower and out the door before she opens the fridge. If she keeps it in a clay pot on the night stand you are just asking for troube

JP1, I seem to remember spending time with a Japanese gal (here in Oz) who occasionally suffered from 'spicy' breath - is this common in Japan too ? Given that many Koreans call Japan home, I suspect that you've learnt from first-hand experience.

 

I'll take any of the above over the diets which make Farang women so freakin huge around the rear end .....

As Jaga wrote, the girls are really gorgeous but adiks remarks are only too true. I still remember the time of the old Seoul Intl. Airport -KIMPO-. Arriving there from Japan the first impression was always the scent. the scent of Kimchi.

if you mean spicy like garlic, yes that can be. Nowadays garlic is quite common in Japan. There are excellent dishes prepared with garlic, such as Teppanyaki or any kind of Ramen. Until about 15 years ago it was not uncommon in Japan to call the Koreans 'Garlic Eaters'. Of course you could have met a Japano-Korean girl. There are many of them all over the country.

I'm afraid I cannot help you here. I travel to Osaka once in a while but don't know much about this city except that people are more talkative, more open minded but also more stingy than in Tokyo.

In Itaewon, try the 3 Alley Pub. A good mix of people - mainly Australians. Gunter is a very good publican.

 

Ghekos Garden is good outside in the beer garden, Ghekos Terrace is always packed, and a good place to party. JJ Mahoneys at the Hyatt has a new live band coming in the next two weeks that is supposed to be pretty good, but standard beers are about KRW 11,000. Helios is busy Thurs-Sat. Thursday is ladies night with free drinks for the girls. As with most ladies nights though, the guys outnumber the girls.

 

Limelight is a new place that is getting all the customers in Itaewon after 1 am. Wednesday night is mens night with female stippers, and Thursday night is ladies night with male strippers. The place rocks wed - until thed wee hours of Sunday morning.

 

For the best looking girls check out the Kangnam / Apgujong areas. Most are simply stunning. S Bar is one of my favorites, but the drinks tend to be a bit pricey. Generally, the most trendy bars can be found in Kangnam-gu. Try Platinum microbrewery for some decent beer.

 

If you are in Boondang there is a good micro brewery around the Samsung Mall.

 

Osaka - I had an absolute ball. Unfortunately I can't rememeber what I did or where I went. There was a lot of drinking involved. I stayed at the Daiichi. Lots of places to party. I found my way to an Irish bar one night and and was invited out to some clubs by a group of foreigners. Got home at 4 and missed my flight back to Seoul the next day.

Jaga, this new band playing in Grand Hyatt could be the band which played since two years in CJ's in Jakarta ; Mojito reported that they quitted JKT to work in Korea ; they're incredibly good (really), and if you go there, have a talk with the Greek singer or the US drumer, they're very nice guys and surely should be pleased to talk about Indonesia ....
