the pha yantra issue...

that is something i have always wondered about - the whole scandal surrounding pha yantra.

i have just spoken again with my missus about him. he has lived for many years very close to my missus's village and was respected there throughout. according to her he lived in poverty in a very tiny temple, was respected as a meditation master of the old school outside the official sangha hirarchy. she has told me again all the stories of his acts of community development there, how he gave away all the goods he received from rich citypeople who visited him, how he did a community project of starting a small villageindustry of making fertiliser from batshit of the surrounding caves.

he appearantly was famous for his meditating powers, sitting for long periods in a cave meditating.

the whole scandal somehow baffles me, given the accounts of the media, and the completely opposite personal accounts of my missus who has met him countless times during her childhood and youth.

is anybody here who might have some more information and knowledge about that case?

was a monk who became famous outside the official sangha hirarchy set up for threatening the established order and status quo?

was it a once powerful and respected monk who went astray?

quote:

>>>>The Judge took note that even after Phra Ajahn Yantra fled Thailand in fear for his life in July 1995, the Thai Government tried to work in collaboration with the United States Government to hunt Phra Ajahn Yantra down and forcibly return him to Thailand. The United States Government told the Thai Government to keep this effort "secret" so that "human rights organizations do not become involved" which could make matters more difficult for the Thai Government. In secret communications to the United States Government, copies of which Phra Ajahn Yantra's lawyer was able to obtain through the United States courts, the Thai Government made very clear that it intended to imprison Phra Ajahn Yantra without bail if he was returned to Thailand. The Thai Government offered to send police to the United States to take custody of Phra Ajahn Yantra and escort him back to Thailand. The United States Government wrote in one document that the Thai Government was "insisting" that Phra Ajahn Yantra be returned to Thailand where he would be jailed, even without consideration of legal procedures set out in the U.S.-Thai extradition treaty.<<<<<

quote end.

only good that the US courts are independent. :)

>>>Wasn't he just in trouble in the US for being in a car accident or something.<<<

yeah, i remember, there was a short article on that some time ago.

>>>Another group that got into trouble was Santi Asoke. Worth investigating. <<<

definately.

one the one hand appear to be very good - lots of veggie restaurants all around, but an ardent follower like gen. chamlong, ultranationalist and the guy who gave thaksin his first real opportunities in politics, was very much involved in politics (still might be from behind the scene). mixing religion and politics in today's world is a bit risky...
