From what I've been told this is the polite thing to do by their customs. Presents given are to be opened in private. Something about the face factor, and the fact of a present not liked shows on the face and can be seen, thereby causing a loss of face to the giver.

 

I've seen this quite a lot. Although in my case my wife has definitely gotten over this custom, but she does still seem a bit nervous and uncomfortable opening gifts in public. An old custom I think that is gradually falling of the wayside, at least for ladies involved with farangs, or exposed to the farang customs regarding gifts. I've even noticed this at B-day parties given for employees of Beer Bars and Gogos, where the gifts are accepted, then placed aside for opening later in private. To us it seems insulting, or as though the gift isn't regarded highly. Not so. Just differing customs.
