You are aware of course, that every Kiwi who leaves the land of the long white cloud, to reside on OZ, raises the average IQ of both countries?

Depends how far south.

True if we get to Mexico, but if only to the US then only one population gets smarter ::

Is it just me, Coss, or are people from the South Island a little, ahem, different ? That may explain said members hesitancy to emerge from the 'shadows' .....

Its not restricted to NZ, either - Croweaters and Sandgropers both suffer from their isolation in relation to we highly urbane types on the blessed East Coast ::

South Islanders, or as they prefer to be called - Mainlanders, have a love hate relationship with those of us in the North Island and in particular Auckland. There is a word "Jaffa" for Aucklanders that's in wide usage in the South Island. Just Another Fucking Aucklander. Yes I know there's another "F" but I didn't come up with the word.

We of course smile politley and remember they are from south of the Bombays. The Bombay Hills being the southern most part of what is still Auckland before you get to the uninhabited parts of Middle Earth.

Cheers

What is you take on the thai scene/community in Auckland like. My wife and I are both NZL citizens, she is also Thai.We fly back and forwards between AKL and BKK very frequently, maintaining residences in both cities. As a conseqence we haven't really gone out of our way involvement wise with the thai community in AKL because we are in BKK so often. Apart from the ubiquitous thai restaurants(Mai Thai being the only one I enjoy) what is there in AKL ? I think there is a temple in Kelston..but that would involve going to west AKL..haha.(no offence to anyone reading from Henderson). We went to a food hall on Queen st once and I heard and awful lot of Issan accents so I presume the North East are well represented in AKL. There are also many well off thai families in AKL and of course children of the well heeled, some politicians children etc...studying English or getting overseas work experience.

What's your take ??

Hi bobjones (the real bob jones?) and other Kiwis.

The best thai bars in Auckland are Chang thai Beach rd City and 42 bar in the old strand building parnell rise.

Chang has been closed for a couple of weeks and I have my doubts it will reopen. Thai bars in auckland seam to come and go very Quickly.

Any board members based or visiting Auckland who would like to meet up email me!

Hey Bob,

My take on the Thai community is that it had a huge influx about 10 years ago. I met My Wi Mee then and we seem to know one Thai-Farang couple in every suburb in Auckland and quite a few hamlets around the country. We also know most of the Chefs and Waitresses around the place, yes there is a Temple somewhere, I've not been there yet.

Since they changed the visa on entry rules I've seen less 'interesting' Thais arriving and more students.

I envy your dual residences, it's all I can do to get to LOS every couple of years.

There is usually a festival here every time there's one in Thailand and most often these are at the Mt Albert Hall, there you can meet the hi and lo of the local community.

Mai Thai is good, I used to have a thing for Bo (if you know who I mean). There's a reasonable restaurant opened up on the main drag in Albany (you can't miss it, only one there) and we've had a few good meals there.

Most of the socialising with Thais I get to do involves 3 or 4 Puying showing up with crabs and motar and pestles for an inpromptu bok-bok party, Som Tam and whiskey and blokes talk quietly amongst yourselves whilst the important business of gossip is conducted.

There used to be a thriving after hours drink and eats and party scene going at various restaurants about town, but with the influx of chinese etc students I think the Thais have been absorbed into the karaokes and the casino.

But as you know Auckland on a good night is like the Pattaya bus station after all the buses have gone... Ahh I'm getting another attack of the Bangkok Blues...

Cheers
