Five-year-old Jakarta blast victim wakes up crying

SINGAPORE (AP): After days under heavy sedation, a 5-year-old girl critically wounded in the Australian Embassy bombing in Indonesia finally opened her eyes on Tuesday and communicated with her father.

Elisabeth Manuela Banbin Musu's Italian stepfather Manuel Musu was at her bedside when she awoke.

"She opened her eyes and she looked at me," Musu said. "I have given her so many questions about her life and she answered yes, yes moving the head and she looked at me."

"The first time she opened her eyes she cried," Musu added.

Musu did not say whether Elisabeth has become aware that her mother, 27-year-old Maria Eva Kumalawati, was killed in last Thursday's blast.

Doctors at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital, where Elisabeth was admitted last Friday, have kept her under heavy sedation because she is likely to be suffering great pain due to her injuries.

She has undergone two operations since being injured by a suspected suicide bomb blast in the Indonesian capital.

Several large pieces of shrapnel were removed from her abdomen and brain and many smaller pieces still remain in her body.

Doctors have said she will suffer some paralysis to her right side but the extent of the disability won't be clear for another six months.

When the blast occurred, Elisabeth was heading for the embassy to pick up her new Australian passport after becoming a citizen on Sept. 1.

Kumalawati's Italian husband, Musu, and the girl's biological father, Australian police officer David Norman, are both keeping a constant vigil by her side. (***)

If you ask me the girl should stay with her father, the one who is her father for 5 years already. Would be interesting to know if they repeat the DNA test to make sure who is the biological father. It's not very likely, but there is a remote chance that the mother and the aussie guy manipulated the test to get citizenship for the kid.

Jakarta blast girl heads to Italy after recovery

SINGAPORE (Reuters): A 5-year-old victim of the Australian embassy bombing in Jakarta, initially feared to be partly paralysed, has beaten all odds to recover rapidly and will leave for Italy on Monday.

Doctors said Elisabeth Manuela Bambin Musu, known affectionately as "Manny", is on her way to a full recovery and "may be able to live like a normal child in a few months".

Local media published photographs of Manny showing her smiling shyly at the camera as she sits upright in a wheelchair, wearing a white embroidered hat and a light pink blouse.

Initially feared killed in the blast, Manny had two operations in Singapore -- one to remove shrapnel from her brain and abdomen, and another to remove the stitches.

"When she came to the hospital, she was almost dead. Both of her pupils were not reacting, which means that statistically, she had less than 5 percent chance of making it," Ng Puay Yong, a consultant neurosurgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital told Singapore's Sunday Times newspaper.

Manny was among 182 people wounded when a car bomb exploded as she approached the Australian embassy with her 27-year-old mother to pick up a passport. The blast killed nine people, including Manny's Indonesian mother.

Media reports said Manny has been told of her mother's death.

Manny will leave with her Italian father, Manuel Musu, on Monday after a 25-year-old Australian man, David Norman, named by media reports as her biological father, decided not to fight for her custody, ending uncertainty over a paternity tussle.

Police suspect militant Islamic network Jamaah Islamiyah carried out the attack in the capital of the world's most populous Muslim country. Jamaah Islamiyah is believed by the police to be the regional arm of al-Qaeda. (**)

Nice that the girl recovers so fast. And a good decision not to fight about her but leave her with her father (the one she's been with all the time, that is).
