it appears that it was not only by suffocation.

dr. pornthip appearantly has flown yesterday night to the scene and has investigated the incident. appearantly a lot of the dead had untreated injuries suffered during the demonstrations, including bullet wounds, were handcuffed and stuffed into the lorries.

absolutely horrific, and another black day for thailand.

"It might be a stupid question, but was this an accident?"

Figuring the soldiers are regular young men with no axe to grind, and most of them being Buddhists with a respect for life and human life in particular, it is much more likely that it was a matter of carelessness or ineptitude. After all, how often have they transported people in this way, in such a hurry? (I only imagine the "hurry" part because they did not arrange for appropriate transportation).

Tragic -terribly. A mistake - certainly, but probably not one born of malice.

Between complete incompetence on the army side and deliberate killings is a grey area. Maybe it was a mixture of incompetence, ignorance and a deliberate form of torture to cave thousands of people in overcrowded trucks and let them suffer in the tropical heat like cattle, maybe not meant to kill the people, but to make them suffer severely...

Thailand is being attacked. Monks and teachers are being slaughtered and Buddhist schools are being burned.

I have no Sympathy for the Devil...

You don't show a very deep understanding of the problem..

If I were a young Muslim in Thailand I'd be plotting my revenge.. nothing surer, I'd find some of those guns that "went missing" and find some boys in brown to take out.

And "During World War II, Thailand was an ally with Japan and allowed its southern territory to invade British dependencies and colonies on the Malay peninsular." Huh? How did the southern territories invade Malaya? In fact, the Japanese invaded Thailand first before moving on to invade Malaya and go for Singapore.

Whoever wrote this piece is a bit confused. I have never seen anything indicating a British promise of Pattani independence. Quite the contrary, how could the Brits set up an independent Malay state while denying their own Malayan colony its freedom? If there was such a promise, it was unofficial and probably never meant to happen.

Sounds plausible to me. The British in Malaya would obviously be happy to see some local opposition to the Japanese in Southern Thailand. I can easily envision a situation where some local British commander would make promises. ("We'll be getting official confirmation of independence from Whitehall in due course....in the meantime here are some weapons, can you get your chaps to kill some Japs?")

Granted the Japanese invasion seems to have happened very fast. Dec 8th. 1941 at the same time as the attack on Pearl Harbour. It was all over very quickly without much resistance.

I'll accept the encyclopedia version unless somebody has more details of what really happened.

the people who died were demonstrators who used their constitutional and human right to demonstrate. people who were arrested and died under gruesome conditions in police custody. this is an outrage just adding to the list of severe human rights violations which were perpetrated under this present government.

this is a truly black day for thailand, an incident which has the potential to turn a low level insurgency down south into a full blown war.

your lack of "sympathy" is truly appalling. disgusting.

The orginal group were CITIZENS OF THAILAND gathered in lawful concern and protest regarding the arbitray and possibly unlawful incarceration

of six of their fellow CITIZENS..

To judge all protesters as terrorists or agitaters and consequently kill either by accident or on purpose is a heinous crime. Heinous bro heinous!!!!!!!

It is not fair that all young men from the south be judged arbitrarily. Some may be as you said devils such as the Bali bombers were ( I lost 4 friends and one very close bro in that bombing but one cannot pre-judge...ever)

Due process would be nice huh?

Eye for an eye can back fire dramatically as will be seen here in the coming weeks/months.

Look at GWB-Praise the lord and pass the ammunition???

What a mess he made just like the PM is doing now. ::

This terrible tragedy and the insensitive remarks by Thaksin will only escalate the problems in the south.

The whole sorry saga is doubly compounded by the fact that it has happened in Ramadan.

Thailand seems to be trying its best to become a big terrorist target.

Written by a Chinese scholar, 2150 AD:

Waging duel campaigns of brutal violence on the one hand, while presenting themselves as victims of hate and ?acts against humanity? in the courts of the world on the other, the Islamists were able to overcome one country after another. They found it easy to exploit Western beliefs in law, justice, humane treatment for all, and religious freedom. Greedy lawyers were eager to work for them and the world media presented their activities as regional and unrelated. The Islamists pressed cases in international courts and appealed to agencies such as Amnesty International and the American Civil Liberties Union. It is ironic that they found support in such forums during the very weeks when they staged the most brutal suicide bombings, public beheadings and mass executions. A few governments, such as Thailand, made concerted efforts to resist, but their methods were condemned by Western opinion and their own news media and they soon fell.

In the end, with over a billion murdered throughout the West, Middle East and Asia, only China has been able to mount the direct action to resist. Thus the world is now under the rule of the The Government of the Islamists which controls seventy-five percent of the world population and the New Chinese Regime which struggles to remain independent and sovereign in the face of relentless attack.
