Yet one of its rising stars, director Apichatpong "Joe" Weerasethakul, champions this approach. Influenced by visionaries from artist Andy Warhol and American experimental film pioneer Bruce Baillie to contemporaries such as Malaysian director Tsai Ming-liang ("What Time Is It There?"), Weerasethakul won this year's Cannes Grand Jury Prize with his surreal "Tropical Malady."
