Call me naive -cause I know I am- but it Thai men still strike me as pretty non-chalant about all of us falung over here for the purposes of banging their broads. Assuming this casualness exists too, does this perhaps relate to that sordid quasi-national sport you refered to?

[sorry to have veered the thread too, found it interesting as it was :: ]

it's all depending.

men here are displaying a non-chalant attitude, but if you get down to the bottom of it, they often are everything than. those supressed emotions can easily be brought out by alcohol, and areas such as bang na, samut prakan - anyhow very violent areas of town - are areas where generally only thais go to get pissed, as mentioned, no farang oriented infrastructure.

just a bloke with his mates whose missus deserted him for a farang might get the drunk idea that he's gonna vent his anger out at you and your missus can be a very frightening situation.

and those rapes are a sad reality here. i don't really know where exactly that comes from other than the stupid believe that good girls are not to be out at night, and the ones who are, if not in protection of a large clique, are free to take. bang na and samut prakan again with the long dark sois and industrial zones are ideal spots. not to speak of the roaming motorcycle gangs, neighborhood gangs, etc...

upcountry is somehow similar, people just go where they are known, and in groups.

often as a farang alone, as a tourist, you will not encounter any problem, on the opposite, you can move very safely in otherwise, for thais, very risky areas. but as soon as you have a thai wife/girlfriend/companion around things might change. that women might just be the right challenge for some arseholes.

Maybe its the potential for violence or harassment that she's concerned about. She seems to cut a wide swath around young men who are drinking.

Rats. Still consigned to the farang ghetto.

definately the potential. and listen to her - better safe than sorry!

you are as confined as most thais here are. thais don't rarely go out in areas they do not have many friends. you can go to nice restaurants, cinemas and other neutral territory such as upper class places. you can go out exploring alone, without the missus, in other areas.

if you want to have some thai style fun - go to the classier, famous comedy and mor lam joints. or go to your little neighborhood joints, where people have known you from sight.

just don't drag your wife into places she deems as potential trouble.

"the recurring vision of how*snap* instantaneously it went from an assault to that impassive Asian gaze returning- as though the chaos prior was an just an illusion. "

This is a good way to put it. When they go off... they really go off with extreme violence and ferocity. Then 2 hours later tell the police: kap pom yes I did just slice that Franag in the neck because he was....

They snap hard and we are along way from the Embassy or "home"

One of the gentleman on the board here( I use the term loosely :)) was severly beaten earlier this year as he escorted a Farang woman home from a bar...Ugly...

Gentlemen, I sincerly thank you! These sobering snippets are causing some lights to go off in the cranium. I suspect I'll be a wiser, lone farang on the prowl as a result. ::

And, in the meantime, I'll wait to develop the Thai language skills before I venture any further than the upper class places. ::

Well I think you have to have had some experience of such places over a period of years to know what you are talking about, listening to gossip and urban myths does not lead to giving good advice about what is safe and where. I think you are just as likely to run into arseholes in falang areas. I wonder if anyone can give examples of a falang/thai couple who got into trouble with one of these 'gangs' other than something that happened to a friend of a friend. All this advice is a bit paranoid in my experience-peter

experience, hmmm... does it count having been working with the rescue volonteers for several years, regularly in the areas you described, picking up casualties from from victims of gang violence frequently?

and very often from fights in exactly the sort of places you advise everyone to check out?

so far i have yet to pick up a farang, as rarely farang ever venture in that part of town to experience the nightlife.

but i guess i must be just paranoid...

>>>I think you are just as likely to run into arseholes in falang areas.<<<

of course you are.

the only slight difference is that those arseholes in farang areas are rarely armed with guns, knifes and swords. which the arseholes you might run into in areas such as bang na and samut prakan definately are.

How does working with the por tek tung or similar organisation lead you to assume that taking a thai woman into a cafe would likely lead to unpleasant results? This is like saying you have seen lots of road casualties out on the streets so would advise people not to drive around. I don't doubt there are some dodgy places with unpleasant sorts looking for trouble, I can only say after going to hundreds od cafes, concerts and karaokes the worst that has happened when out with a woman has been guys asking for her phone number, but that happens at high class places as well.-peter

Speaking to my mrs on this she agrees but goes on to say that almost anywhere is dangerous in bkk (shes born and bred within the metro area), I have been to Thai night clubs with her around Chaeng Wattana/Pakkret area (never quite sure where we go!), she always told me to keep quiet if things kicked off, mind you often we're with her brother and a friend or two of his....security NEVER frisk me when I go in such places:angel:, I have yet to see any violence in a Thai nightclub...I did have a scare in a club in some bumfuck town between Phuket and bkk some years ago ::

Peter,

in another thread I told already how the former Santa Fe club on Koh Samui was closed down a few years back, due to the fact that it was merely a Thai frequented night club and there were too many shootings, stabbings and the like.

I can imagine that places outside Samui, in bigger cities are even worse.

What Fly points out is coming from experience IMHO and his experiences with por tek tung etc may relate very well to this story, since I think that these organisations unfortunately pick up the pieces.

How many times have you been to concerts where there were fights BTW?

If you fail to see all these points I wish you good luck on your future events.
