Torrent Clients

I finally broke down and got a DSL service, so thought I would take a stab at bit torrents. Installed the latest version of Azureus and at first everything seemed to work fine. Now I?m getting hard resets to my computer after the program runs for awhile. The time varies, but the result is exactly what you would get should you press the reset button on the front of your machine.

I have a newer very fast P4 machine that up till now has been very stable, so the problem does seem related to the running Azureus program. I read where others have had problems with this program, but no mention of the one I?m having. Has anyone else encountered this and if it turns out I can?t use Azureus what?s the next best alternative?

I updated to the latest Java version prior to installation. My firewall is ZoneAlarm, not sure what setting you are talking about. Have found that if I eliminate the programs in the lower window of the Azureus program (out-going seeding rank) I no longer have the reset problem.

Perhaps my pipe is not fat enough (hmm...) to handle the outgoing and incoming traffic, although my task manager processor resource meter indicates plenty of of headroom still available.

Empornium is better. Just D/L and have a look!!! hehe :)

I use Azureus. I had problems as well. My computer would hang. I had to remove java and re-install it.

An aside: It seems that the optimum number of torrents for me to have running is about Eight (adding both downloading and seeding together). Above that there's a chance that it hangs my router (Dlink G604T) and none of the other computers can access the internet or the router's itself (thought they get IP addresses).

Seems strange you only get the hard boot when seeding.

I'm looking at my options page and I'll tell you what my configuration is, but I think it's standard.

I don't know what hardware/software you are running ... but sometimes you get a reset if you're system is running too hot .. and it's entirely possible to overheat your system if the processor is constantly running .. and that maybe due to some sort of software issue (or playing games).

Did you install a bunch of plugins for Azureus? This may contribute to issue ... I get a lot of pop up message on mine (I run Norton Internet 2005).

You may wanna remove, delete files and reinstall Azureus and Java ... upto you.

Thanks for the help fellas, I think my problem was I had too many files I was trying to download in the upper ?My Torrents? window and also too many in the lower window that I had already downloaded and were seeding. Apparently, the program or my machine just can?t handle that kind of upload/download traffic. The problem was not related to overheating ? I?ve got a very well cooled machine.

Think I may try the Empornium program suggested as my download speed seems way too slow - varying from about 5 kbps to about 35 kbps, the average seems to be about 12. Perhaps I?ve got other problems (this torrent shit is new to me)?

I did try bypassing my router and that didn?t seem to help. What kind of speeds should one be getting with a DSL service that?s supposed to deliver 384 ? 1500 kbps? It took me like 48 hours to download a couple of torrent files that added up to less than 3 gigs...

To many things to consider when looking at torrent speeds.

I've got 1 meg down/512k up. On average, I download about 1.5 gig a day (24 hours).

Sometimes like now, I'm seeing my download is about 42kB/s. Normally it's like this. I'll see 18 and 25. I'll also see 85 to 110 kB/s as well.

Just depends on how many seeders you're connected to, the proximity of them to you so your computers can respond and communicate quickly.

I notice that above Downloading/Seeding more than 10 files, it seems my computer can't respond quick enough and my speeds are a bit slower. Maybe that's just me though.

You shouldn't bypass the router, but you should have your ports forwarded on the router. I guess you're doing that if you are seeing speeds up to 35kB/s already.

Empornium by the way isn't a program. It's a website that tracks torrent files. Hard to get into as it's limited to 200k people I think. But when the admin cleans house and deletes old accounts, the number will dip below and you can sign up..
