I cannot find the link, but I remember reading that Mr Haugen was asked to leave Thailand due to his slandering of the Royal Thai Police Force. Dunno if that was a temp thing or a forever thing.

But more interesting was this link that I found while searching for the original story.

Cheers,

I reckon it's the "Trading Places" argument: are your chances in life determined by your upbringing? Kristoff seems to believe, like a lot of socialists tend to, that it does and so (for him) these girls had little choice in the matter. He regards their fates as inevitable. This is the thing I think he assumes but with which I would tend to disagree. I've seen girls from similar backgrounds (sometimes in the same family!) choose different routes for themselves. Some become street-vendors, some work in factories, some become teachers, others choose prostitution. When in prostitution, some make choices to get out and some don't. Whether you're a middle-class British man in his thirties or an African child born to poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, I reckon you always have choices to make...

No the idea is not that it's inevitable, it's that it becomes more likely for specific reason than such a profession is chosen.

If Cambodia had a Nordic kind of system, I think it's much less likely that so many would end up as prostitutes.

The issue for me is not if it is so, it's how to put more contries up the ecconomic ladder. That's a difficult isse and worthy of debate.

Informative link. One very recent article refers to Haugen cliaming large numbers of child sex slaves in Thailand, and accusing the Thai Police of being on the take. Sheri Scott article

"Over three million dollars goes into the pockets of IJM employees, while less than a fraction goes to the very children in need. What does that tell you about IJM's real interests and motivations? (Source: International Justice Mission FINANCIAL STATEMENTS AND INDEPENDENT AUDITORS' REPORT DECEMBER 31, 2002 AND 2001)

This, my friends, is not an organization concerned about saving children: it's all about pretending to save children as a ploy to solicit donations and government grants so people like Gary Haugen and his scheming cohorts can strike it rich. The three million dollars that went into the hands of IJM employees testifies to that. To me, such scams constitute fraud and deceit, which, last time I checked, are illegal where Haugen comes from. So why isn't Haugen facing criminal charges for such fraud? Or is it that the same corruption of justice he so much complains about within the child sex trade in Asia, is also found in Haugen's very own backyard?

As for TV programs such as the O'Reilly Factor FOX NEWS, they should be exposing such scams, rather than promoting them. One pimp sells the kids for sex (the sex trade in Asia), while the other pimp sells the story of kids being forced to engage in sex (FOX NEWS O'Reilly Factor). Both are - how shall I put it? In the words of O'Reilly himself, nothing more than ?on the take?.

Editorial comment. If the Royal Thai police in Bangkok agree with Sheri Scott?s defence of them against what she calls their defamation by IJM, perhaps they and the other relevant Thai authorities will now cooperate with us in exposing the activities of IJM and certain other NGOs in Thailand.

And will Gary Haugen respond to Sheri Scott?s challenge to come forward and tell us exactly where the so-called thousands of child sex slaves in Bangkok are to be found? She is there and can check.

Also would he please respond to our examination of IJM?s financial accounts where we found only a small fraction received in grants and donations possibly going to charity?"

Cambodian women 'not abducted'

By Guy De Launey BBC, Phnom Penh

The Cambodian government has issued a report into the alleged kidnapping of dozens of sex workers from a safe house in the capital Phnom Penh in December.

It says the women left the facility of their own accord.

The anti-human trafficking group which ran the safe house, Afesip, has criticised the report's findings as a "cover up".

Cambodia has made great efforts to show it is serious about tackling human trafficking.

Police raided a hotel in Phnom Penh because they believed it was offering sex with under-age girls.

They took more than 80 women to a safe house in the capital.

Within hours, the women had gone. Witnesses said a fleet of vehicles arrived and the gates of the facility were forced.

But the inter-ministerial investigation has concluded that the women broke down the gates themselves.

It also says no under-age girls were present.

The report has angered the anti-human trafficking group at the heart of the affair. Afesip requested the initial police investigation that resulted in the raid and they ran the shelter to which the women were taken.

The organisation insists there has been a cover-up to protect powerful figures connected to the hotel.

They say they will appeal for international donors to intervene.

The saga could have serious consequences for Cambodia. The United States is considering downgrading the country's status on an anti-trafficking list. That could result in sanctions.

At the risk of inflaming this thread once more, (not that I did in the 1st place) :)

A point to note is that the NGO, if right in this instance, would have a 100% (according to them) track record. Not even God has a 100% track record, and I don't even acknowledge him/it/them.

"Within hours, the women had gone."

One would think that if the Cambodian Police and "Special" squad who were involved in this were on to a genuine "bust" that they would have prevented this. Not all of Cambodia is so corrupt that genuine atrocities can still take place.

I could write a book about all the bad things that are happening in Cambodia, but it might not be true.

"They say they will appeal for international donors to intervene. "

Well you would wouldn't you? to not do so, would be to say, "Ooops we fucked up, please don't give us any more money."

Any way - standard disclaimer - I am sure that terrible stuff happens in Cambodia, just like elsewhere in the world, but in three trips, I have only encountered, genuine, adult P4P. And I'm not looking for anything else, not even in the name of research.

Cheers

Hi,

a lot of experts have given their POVs in this thread. Many of those have never visited Cambodia or if so it was years ago.

I've been there once a few weeks ago, did interview more than 10 girls from 2 bars and didn't find any sign of sex slavery. But of course this is of no importance as all political correct people already decided what's the truth.

Phil,

what I saw was cleaner and nicer than Beach Rd Pattaya in the evenings/nights. The only disturbing scene was an old farang in the riverside restaurant beside the one I had dinner with TGF - he collected all children selling flowers and other things around him and asked each child what he/she could do for him.

All under 25-30 speak a good english - much better than in Thailand actually. Above that age just french, mais c'est la vie en rose.......

Yes some girls are young but over 18 at least, the youngest I found is 19 and still a virgin even if she works in a bar. An other difference compared with Thailand is that you can barfine a girl but that doesn't mean she has to do anything. For example I barfined a girl from Shanghai to play pool with me a few hours. Afterwards I tipped her 5 USD which surprised her, she did expect nothing except the free drinks.
