OCgringo
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4289637.stm does not sound good..... some of the story World health officials have issued their strongest warning yet about the global threat posed by bird flu. The world is now in the gravest possible danger of a human flu pandemic triggered by the virus, Dr Shigeru Omi told a conference in Vietnam. The World Health Organisation fears bird flu may get deadlier if it mutates into a form that could be easily transmitted between humans. Thirteen people have died in Vietnam from the virus since December. Governments need to take quick action to control the virus's spread, Dr Omi added continues here http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4289637.stm

New Petchburi Pete
I saw in the news that a vaccine for humans has been developed in the States. However, only 2 or 3 million doses have been made. Should human to human transmission occur, who will decide who gets the vaccine? In order for human to human transmission to take place, the virus would have to mutate. Therefore, there is no guarantee that the vaccine would even work. How can one develop a vaccine for a strain of virus which does not yet exist?

New Petchburi Pete
OK, it's both! While the whole spectre of a pandemic is alarming, one should keep in mind that if the strain does mutate to allow human to human transmission, this does not necessarily mean that the human 'strain' would necessarily be fatal. OCgringo
OK....I thought it was news because it was a NEWS report. It has been on all the national news broadcasts here in the USA. Even the thought of bird flu happening will keep many tourists away, but if it does get into the human population , look out. Local governments will try to keep it hidden which will just make it worse ! OC
Bkkbound04
This is a technical document but reinforces the notion that its 'when' rather than 'if' a flu pandemic occurs. UK Gov Pandemic Plan JP
