Thai music, anybody else?

On my first trip to LOS in '94 I bought some tapes in Pattaya, had not got a clue who the singers were, I just pointed at the covers with the best looking girls on them. On each trip since (10) I have bought more and more CD's and now have about 200 , not including the VCD's.

It's got to the stage where I would rather spend my money in a karaoke or cafe listening to thai singers, especially morlam, than in a bar. Of course I have mostly no idea what the songs are about except when the video tells the story. The problem with Thai music is if you miss a CD it could be gone for good as there seems to be almost no back catalogue , so if anyone knows of any second hand shops please let me know.

There seem to be no books, magazines or pics available of thai singers, except maybe about the young pop stars who all seem to be half thai for some reason.

I always take a CD player with small speakers with me, girls love to look through the stack of music and pick out their favourite and it's nice to fall asleep listening to some slow song with the lady singing along softly in your ear. No wonder I'm addicted, there really are some great songs and singers in LOS . Anybody else have this sad condition?.-peter

I sometimes listen to Luk Thung FM on my computer with RealPlayer for Thai country music. Unfortunately, RealPlayer is quite buggy and crashes frequently, especially if multitasking. It would be nicer if Luk Thung FM changed over from .ram format to .asx, since i've found Windows Media player to be more stable.

Yeah, Carabao rocks. Et Carabao is the Thai Neil Young, Well, maybe not, but they still rock.

I would love to find a phonetic transliteration of "Luang Por Khun."

"Mei dah mahat mah kohn, sit sah tu chon, sit Luang Por Khun."

Thats about as far as I got.

One of my fondest memories about 2 yrs ago was having a lady in Pattaya get up and sing me the sweetest and saddest Lao song I ever heard. To see that little waif belt out that tune was unbelievable. And the bar and time stood still. For me anyways. Ahhh...

Went to see Jintara in Pattaya about 3 months ago. Great show, even though a little too pat and staged. For 60Bht could not be beat. laugh.gif" border="0

Lucky you, I would pay anything to see her, thats another problem finding out when concerts are on. She has a big concert coming up in July that I found out about on BKK chat from a scot who lives in Mukdahan. Thai's never seem to know when or where people are singing. If you ever get a chance to see Yui Yat Yeer go, she is so cute and can sing like a bird.-peter

200 cd's wow! That is a lot, especially when I have heard so much crappy thai music (not meaning to insult you).

I have bought a lot of thai music recently, and there are certain artists that I like, like Beau, Yarinda, Loso, Phalapol, Ray and Am(?). I have to wade through a lot of crap though to get to the golden nuggets, because I have no idea what to look for.

I also bought a coule of Karaoke cd's, good for learning the lyrics and to check out the videos.

I will be taking a stack of mp3 cd's home with me to fuel my addiction.

Cheers,

SOONGMAK

Too true mate there is a lot of crap, or at least stuff I do not like. Beau sunita is very good and popular with many of the girls. If you like Loogkrung check out Mam Patcharida she has two nice albums, love book and singing heart. Also Kai Panipha, Kai has a stack of CD's but the best is Rak guen Roi. Also anything by Sunaree Rachasima esp early albums 5 and 8, her new one does not have one memorable song. www.thainetcity.com is the place to check on singers and some albums have a real audio clip.If you want to get some morlam go for Jintala Poonlarp, Siriporn, Joy, Monsit,oh and a new CD called Jam Lie but forget the name of the artist as I cannot read the label, a good reason to learn some thai!-peter

Pongsit Kumpee, Carawan, Su Su, and Carabao are my personal faves - all "phleeng phua chiwt" (songs for life) bands. The songs for life musical genre is more about the theme (social issues) than about a particular musical style. Carawan, for example, is quite folk-oriented, while Carabao is closer to rock.

Plenty of songs for life bars all over Bangkok - they make for a good night out.
