Why do women tennis stars grunt?

It's not a grunt but in Japanese martial arts you are taught the "Kiai", a very strong sound used to concentrate the whole energy in a split second into the hit. A "Kiai" has a psychological quality as well since it is an expression of energy and concentration and could discourage other fighters. But a "Kiai" sounds different to the tennis players "grunt", it sounds much more powerful since it requires a special technique.

the grunts ARE pretty annoying... but not more than the inane commentary for the women's matches... who the hell were they, anyway??

@Zaad

"If they find rules for such silly things then I'll definitely send in my complaints about Mr. Ebdon (snooker player) who walks 5 times round the table before going for a shot"

I would LOVE to see this guy play at New Wave... how long would the soi 7 gals take this??? (perhaps until he agreed to go for a quick short time) I wonder if he would walk around the bed 5 times, too??

:)
