tomc12
A 2-3 inch scar is 5-7.5 cm, not 12-15 cm. You cannot do a C-section through this kind of opening into the abdomen. The biparietal diameter alone of a term fetus is 9-10 cm so just the incision into the uterus has to be at least this size plus a little extra for your hand to fit in. The abdominal incision has to be even larger than the uterine incision to give room to control bleeding and to suture it back up. Also a beltline incision is high for a C-section. A 2-3 inch incision is typical for an appendectomy, is located at beltline, but is located in the right side.
Guest
tomc12 - good eye on the math ... Sanukie never was a math whiz, and as his medical brain thinks in metrics, he goofed in the conversion ...so I took the liberty of editing his original post here. Having seen hundreds of each of these incisions being made ... the rest of his information is correct. josh_ingu - with regard to "upcountry doctors" and incision size ... consider that bar girls who've had c-sections most likely didn't get pregnant "upcountry" and therefore, had their babies in bangkok. Time to move on. [ May 18, 2001: Message edited by: tc4rob ]
augustart
I appreciate the question and the answer, specially regarding the first question. Like SamuiGeorge, I have also always been curious about that line. Now I know. Thanks. augustart
