Riding Out Katrina

Well guys, Katrina has struck. For those of you that don't know, Katrina is a class 4, bordering on class 5 hurricane that is now pounding Louisiana with 150 mph winds. We're expecting massive loss of life, and billions of dollars in damages before this is over. New Orleans may be under water for weeks as it sits below sea level, actually in a bowl, and with a storm surge of 24-28 feet, things don't look good. We'll keep you advised as long as we have power. Wish we were in LOS. :)

I did not know you were in Gnawlins. Godspeed. I have many old friends there (mostly in Metarie, but right on the Lake :o). I hope all is well. Me Ma rode out Category 5 Andrew in her 15th floor condo in No. Miami Beach in 1992. Unbelievable damage there -- I was able to get there in November to see her while the storm was in August. It was still an incredible mess with whole suburbs/cities wiped out.

Take care of yourself and don't be a hero!!!!

Cheers,

SD

I'm north of New Orleans in Southern Mississippi, but we're having the same weather. It was just reported the roof of the Superdome ( indoor stadium that seats about 75K and is being used as a shelter of last resort) is being breached. About a 10% is off and exposed to the outside elements and it's 100+ mph winds. There are approximately 10.000 people being housed in the dome. Will post more when additional info is available.

Hi Hsteach,

Didn't know you were from Nawlins. I am from there too. Was on phone last night relaying satellite info to friends there until their mobiles went out about 8 AM local time. Haven't been able to get through since, Saw on TV right near where I used to live water up to the roofs,

Sorry to be late posting but electricity has been out. The Gov. of Louisiana has ordered the entire remaining population of NO to evacuate the city. No safe drinking water and the standing water, which covers approximately 80% of the city, is becoming contaminated with sewage, petro products, and dead corpses. The gulf coast of Mississippi is no more. I'll take tears to rebulid Biloxi/Gulfport. All the casinos have been wiped out. Out of business for at least a year, if not longer. Unofficial estimates of deaths on the MS. Gulf Coast are in the high hundreds. That doesn't include any deaths in Louisiana. Never hope to see anythinh like this again. Estimated damages are 20-25 BILLION $.
