Hey, ND

I see your point, but I think quite a few of us will say that as soon as the contest starts, they realize their pix, or one of them, is not fitting anymore, and sure enough, it does not get far, though it may be a nice shot.

Since we are a forum, let's have input on this, we have plenty of times, no one has to hand a verdict if you don't want to, and people will get a better feeling if a monk being shaved for is ordination in an undescript sala is as valid as the spires of Wat Phra Kheo, to speak of extremes.

Just an example. maybe someone had a shot of 2 elders, like Stick's. but thought ""can't send, it's 2 people, people will wonder why 2? or which one of the 2?". Then realize the contest was wide enough to send that pix.

Thanks.

I think most of the contests, while you always kick yourself afterwards, hav been pretty much on theme.

What seemed to stump people is "What's a Portrait" forgetting you've probably been in a stack of them at family photo shoots.

However I think Temple is MUCH easier, if I was a judge, and I am one vote only out of every one, I'd be looking for a temple photo, not religious activity.

It could be one in sunset, it could be a old one full of character, a gross new one (speeking of which, have a look at the Tamagai temples!)

I would vote for one where the subject matter is more the priests/monks, I;d be looking at the temple being the subject matter.

Dog

PS - KS - how many people voted?

OK, this helps. Temple must be visible, and clearly important to be seen, whatever else is in the compo (sunset, monks, etc...).Right?

By all means, ND, don't think I am arguing. But for example, since i have a huge collection of shots, I can say that i had dozens and dozens of portraits, all ages, but much less of what i call character portraits, still enough to cast a "winner", though . This was a popular theme, I think we will have it again next year, in which time i will have a bigger collection!

I find my best photography has been done in India and Burma, ie. outside of Thailand where I have just nice shots. Goes for temples as well. With the upcoming trip to Angkor, i predict the trend will continue.

next stupid Q: thai/thailand temples only?

Site of the Week:

812 Wonders of the World (and Growing)

In 1972, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) sponsored an international agreement to start a World Heritage List of sites that make up the heritage of all humankind. There are now 812 sites on the list--812 world wonders--and more are added every year.

In 2001, the Taliban government of Afghanistan used tanks, explosives, and anti-aircraft guns to destroy two ancient and colossal statues of the Buddha in Afghanistan's Bamiyan Valley. Outraged, Belgian photographer Tito Dupret started the World Heritage Tour, an effort to photograph--using 360-degree panoramas--all of UNESCO's World Heritage sites, recording them for posterity and giving everyone virtual ownership of the cultural wonders of the world. Just click and see the world's cultural riches now

The images are 360 degrees and by using the mouse you can turn round. Try moving the mouse towards the top centre and then to the side, the result is like lying drunk on one's back and watch the sky spinning round very fast. A truly amazing effect.

Cheers,
