Arised or arose?

OK please help chaps. I wrote a report at work which contained the words, "the problems that ARISED due to....."

I have since received many notes, abusive comments etc from Thais with talking dictionaries who claim the word should be "arose".

Looking at dictionaries, I have to admit they seem right. I am sure I have heard the word "arised" used frequently.

I am normally so proud of my writing as I'm sure my posts here demonstrate. Is "arised" a word or have I made a mistake?

JCK,

Arose is correct. Arised isn't a word. Arisen, arises, arising, are also proper.

I heard a guy on television last night use the word (not) "arrove" in place of "arrived".

You probably have heard the word "arised" used before in common speech, but it is not proper English, and not really a word. So the Thais were correct! :-) Ouch. 555!

arise

· v. (past arose; past part. arisen)

1 originate or become apparent. Ø (arise from/out of) occur as a result of.

2 formal or poetic/literary get or stand up.

Concise Oxford English dictionary (100 - 150 baht, Panthip Plaza). Handy little utility that sits in the background. highlight any word and instant info appears.
