Flashermac Posted November 28, 2005 Report Share Posted November 28, 2005 Star of the century: A bronze statue of martial arts legend Bruce Lee was unveiled in Hong Kong 26 Nov 2005 AFP It took more than 30 years, $A135,000 and a lot of convincing, but late martial arts legend Bruce Lee finally got the recognition his legions of fans worldwide feel he deserves with a monument in Hong Kong, the city that made him famous. A bronze statue to the high-kicking kung fu star was unveiled on Sunday evening before friends, family and local officials in a ceremony on what would have been Lee's 65th birthday. The 2.5-metre tall, 600 kilogram monument, placed along the harbour-front Avenue of the Stars, Hong Kong's equivalent of Hollywood's Walk of Fame, is the culmination of years of badgering and fund-raising by the Bruce Lee Club. The Hong Kong statue, which has the words "Star of the Century: Bruce Lee" carved on the base, was created by renowned Chinese sculptor Cao Chongen and transported from his workshop in south China's Guangzhou city. Although born in the United States, it was here that Lee made the movies - among them Big Boss and Fist of Fury - that created his legend. The unveiling ceremony was the highlight of the city's inaugural week-long Bruce Lee Festival, which featured screenings of rare footage of the star and tours of Lee's schools, homes and the studios where he made his movies. The ceremony was the second this weekend to the late star - a day earlier the world's first memorial to Lee was unveiled in Mostar, Bosnia. "We have received reports that the statue has been damaged. We are currently investigation the incident," a police officer in Mostar said. Flashermac Posted November 28, 2005 Author Report Share Posted November 28, 2005 The only really decent Lee film was "The Way the Dragon" (also called "Return of the Dragon"). It's the film that introduced Chuck Norris, who played a villain and fought against Lee. Bruce Lee himself was very charismatic. I watched the Green Hornet TV series just for the times "Kato" was in action. The story lines of his films basically were almost comic book level, but that is what Hong Kong was churning out then. I used to watch all of the Shaw Brothers flicks, and the stories in them generally were pathetic too. You watched the movies for the martial arts scenes, not the plot. "The Big Boss", Lee's first HK film, was shot in Thailand. (It was called "Fists of Fury" in the US release.) As I recall, Lee comes to visit his cousins. Drugs get involved and Lee ends up taking on the bad guys. Lee's tragic death at 32 no doubt helped his fame. His funeral procession lasted for days in Hong Kong.
