And to add: to go to Cambo just for P4P would be a waste, really.

My urgent suggestion would be to fly to PP for a weekend, take the bus (very convenient nowadays) to Siem Reap to visit Angkor for a minimum of two days. Angkor is changing so rapidly (with 10 luxury hotels already opened) that will be completely commercialized and overrun by tourists within the next years.

Go there NOW!

:yeahthat:

Interesting POV regarding Siem Riep. Ijust came back after dropping down from the Thai broder crossing just south of Surin. My first trip to Siem Riep was some 16 years ago and there was frankly nothing but a crappy guest house and the classic Angor hotel. I am a scholar of this art form and still enjoyed visiting the temples I remembered years ago.

But it is a shoddy reminder with an over grown town teeming with pushy tour groups from China and Taiwan, constant over building.I would suggest to everyone to go but be prepared for a 100% shock if you went years ago-Its like Disneyland now- In the old days we used to sit at Angor and enjoy the local------- if the Khmer ROuge were not around...Bantey Srei was at the end of a tiny local wagon path that required armed escort.Ta Prhrom was deserted

For those that want a taste of the old times now go to Bang Maleeah some 45 kms from town -still deserted and for night time the better venue is the "Zone" dsico with girls- I watched the scene and my friend took a Khmer girl later.

But Siem Riep is pretty much being detroyed.

For those interested in the sculpture try and get into the Conservatory where many of the piece have been taken for safety.

Its all good :)but man I was shocked ::at the change even from 5 years ago(the last trip) :(

Guest lazyphil

I was there 6 years ago and it was pretty rustic, which is good I suppose, but now its all good for the Cambodians surely even if its not aesthetically pleasing to the 'scholarly eye!

...<snipped>..I figure on flying into BKK, staying 6 nights, fly to PP for 2, back to BKK and take a cab to Pattaya for the rest of the trip.

I think you'd best drop PPenh from your itinerary and spend more time in Thailand and less time flying around. A mere 2-days in PPenh is insufficient...you'll barely have time to learn how to get around. PPenh, as well as much of Cambo, can be wonderful...contrary to Wanderlust's post. There are many places other than the oft visited tourist places mentioned by Wanderlust, but you'd best gleen such info from locals who may be reluctant to clue in a traveler. They (nor I) do not want such places to be posted on the Net.

Why not? Is it the sort of place you're ashamed of visiting or just so good you want to keep it secret? At least give a hint at the sort of places you're talking about.

Sorry pal, no hints! Do your own homework. I've spent well over a year's time in Cambo during the last 5-6 years, spending a fair amount of the time visiting areas outside of PP, SR and 'Snooky'. I'm no expert, but anyone who is aware of the political situation and the overzealous actions of some of the (religious based) NGO's knows it's ill advised to mention certain things on the Net. While I'm not an avid punter, I know of areas where gals are working of their own volition (not enslaved!) and why would I want them closed should some tourist crow on the Net about finding a 'new' location.

Well you sort of answered my question. So there are decent places to go outside PP, SR and Snooky where the girls are not enslaved. Sounds good. I fully understand you don't want to reveal the location, but it won't do any harm to tell us the nature of the places. Are we talking freelancer joints or massage parlours?
