Agree that 1984 is a classic "did it at school", and it stuck with me (no mean feat for anything at school!) last year I bought it again.

Well worth reading again for anyone. It was meant to be a warning, not a "How to manual" of course ::

I tend to read a lot of paperbacks when on holiday, the hardest thing is remebering what I have read! (I stick to the same sort of "blokelit" thriller stuff) when I also read the Da Vinci code a few years ago I was pretty sure I had read it already until I was half way through - this was before the court case.

I do like the "Jack Reacher" novels by Lee Child. Just finished his latest one. There is of course only so much variation in each, but enuf for them to still keep my interest.

Solo1Mick,

"Jack Reacher novels my Lee Child, excellent reads."

Yep, love Reacher and Childs is a great writer of this style of fiction. Always a good read. I understand though what David66 is saying about the sameness though. A lot of the serials get a bit too alike, but I do get comfortable though with a well written and fleshed out character, especially if the author comes up with some decent plots and mystery for the character to get involved with. Actually I think this is why Johnathan Kellerman had his hero Alex Delaware break up with the much liked luthier GF he had in many of his earlier stories. Just wanted to free him up for other things and a change of pace. Worked for me at least.

"Rebus novels by Ian Rakin."

I love Rankin's writing style and inserted musical tidbits, and Rebus is cool and a good character. I hate to see his stories end. Always ready for another Rebus book to read.

"Tony Hill novels by Val McDermit + all the other stuff she written."

Yeah, McDermitt keeps getting better and better. Her latest (or the latest I've read of hers) was her best to date. Forget the title, but was about a stepdad raping and killing his stepdaughter in a remote hamlet where he was the Lord of the village sort of type. Very well written, and one of the only books I have read in years where I still hadn't figured out who dunnit until the last few of chapters. She's done well. Her 'Blood in the Wire' was excellent as well. And I think 'The Mermaids Singing' or something like that title as well I enjoyed and was a good read. She wrote for a long time for a Scottish newspaper didn't she? I know she's a lesbian, and one of her series main characters is a lesbian, forget which series heroine it is now. She has a couple series out. Every book she does just gets better and better. I turned my Dad on to her stuff and he liked her so much he went out and bought the lot of her stuff on-line and read them all. I got them once he was done with them. Picked up a 'double' book of hers in Pattaya at the Soi Bukhao Swan Bookstore and enjoyed them both for a nice price. :) Liked them so much I brought the damn book all the way back to the states just to give my Dad a read.

Great site, Gummigut. Thanks very much. Just right to my taste.

Dog, Anais Nin, how boring...it does not touch my heart nor does it make me horny. The writing is good but thats all. Problem is I never read an Erotic novel that really was shit hot and touched me...So I am writing them my self.

Loved the Da Vinci Code. Not for the writing style (especially the beginning is pretty boring) but for its controversial material about Jesus and Mary Magdalene, Nights Templar, the Holy Chalice. But watched a few docs on National Geografic and Discovery and both checked out the 'facts' as Brown calls them in his book but could not really back the story up. Discovery's check up was not that thorough but was quite bland in their conclusion: Bull shit... NatGeg was a bit positive but could not confirm either. I did not enjoy watching these I rather believe in the dream a la Da Vinci. A hopeless romantic I am.

Anybody likes Paulo Coelho? I red many of his books but cant really figure out why. He has some kind of spiritual message in there but the storylines are so drawn out and I am happy if I reach the finish - not because I wanna know how the climax is - but than I can put it aside.

Then go to the porn sites, my fav is www.asstr.org, lots of good shit, personally I like the writer there called Bif jones.

Woopie, anyone can write controversial, so what, it's all made up, ffuck all factual! If it wants to get my attention as ccontroversial it has to be either Nabakov's Lolita, Story of O, or factual.

She ended up being the editor for on of the nationals I think?

The lesbian heroine was Lynsey Gordon the freelance Journalist.

She also had a character called Kate Brannigan, sort of a private eye. These where also very good reads.

Cent is you like the Reacher novels then read Vince Flynn. His character Mitch Rapp is excellent, same as Reacher go it alone type guy.
