stumpy Posted June 20, 2006 Report Share Posted June 20, 2006 Looked in the mirror almost a week ago and noticed one lymph gland was the size of a small strawberry. Popped off to the doctors and he prescribed Clarithromycin. Felt ok apart from a minor sore throat. Anyway a week on now have a chest infection, lymph gland still swollen but less than before but keep feeling dizzy when I stand up. Hit the floor one time so I know to go steady with it. Now on amoxcilin 250 3 times a day. Feel bad, taking paracetemol for aching muscles. Doctor said the dizziness was a standard response to having a virus. I asked why he was giving me antibiotic if he thought it was a virus and he implied he was hedging his bets, if it's a bacteria we can kill it, if it's a virus will have to wait for nature. SingaporeSteve Posted June 20, 2006 Report Share Posted June 20, 2006 If you have been playing around in last 3 months, I would also suggest going to see an infectious diseases specialist - these (particularly the very swollen lymph nodes) are also symptoms of a HIV sero-conversion. Reason I say see a specialist is that regular HIV test will probably still read negative or inconclusive. Better to get this properly checked out if you have had any possible exposure in last 3 months. They may well suggest a viral load check which will actually check if their is any HIV virus itself in your blood as opposed to regular HIV checks which check for your bodies own anti-body activity. You dont say where you are but if your in Bangkok, Bumrungrad is the place to go and make sure you make an appointment with an infectious diseases specialist as they are trained in how to look for the signs of a sero conversion. SingaporeSteve Posted June 21, 2006 Report Share Posted June 21, 2006 You do not need to wait 3 months - if you believe that you may have had a risky encounter go and see a STD specialist if your in the UK - Depends where you are but for sure in London the biggest centre in Europe for STD's/HIV is Chelsea and Westminster Hospital - they may well based on symptons decide to undertake viral load tests - dont bother with your GP, he wont have a clue and would probably just refer you to your nearest STD centre. In the UK, you do not need GP referal to go to a STD centre - infact you dont even need to consult your GP due to confidentiality rules. I have seen a specialist and had an MRI scan, I do have an enlarged lymph gland but he states it is within acceptable parameters. I have to see him for a follow up in 4 months. Did he sleep around with whores without protection? Only he can answer that.... As to people jumping on the HIV/AIDS bandwagon, it is much more complicated than I was in Thailand recently and now I have a single symptom. The odds are far greater that the cause of swelling is for some other reason. What if any other symptoms does he have? One needs to look at dates and how many trips and what were at risk practices if any undertaken? What are his practices at home or elsewhere? Lets not all panic here. I wonder if everyone who screws around and with at risk practices in LOS or elsewhere follows up with periodic HIV testing??? My guess it is a very low percentage of guys who meet the above criteria actually follow-up with HIV testing? One of problems is before one could conclude negativity with seriel results, the guy is already back in LOS screwing around again..testing would never end until at risk behavior terminate...
