FIFA ban Zidane and Marco Materazzi

Zurich (dpa) - France's retired Zinedine Zidane was handed a three-match ban by football's ruling body FIFA Thursday for his head- butt to the chest of Italy's Marco Materazzi in the World Cup final on July 9.

Materrazi was handed a two-match ban for his part in the incident which came in the second period of extra-time with the sides level at 1-1.

Zidane was sent off by Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo for his actions which were spotted by the fourth official, Luis Medina Cantalejo. Italy went on to win the match in a penalty shootout.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Zidane has already retired from football but the 34-year-old but has already pledged to do three days of community service work with children and youngsters as part of FIFA's humanitarian activities.

Zidane was also handed a fine of 7,500 Swiss francs (5,986 dollars) by FIFA's disciplinary committee which also fined Materazzi 5,000 Swiss francs for "repeatedly provoking Zidane".

Materazzi appeared before FIFA on July 14 while Zidane was at FIFA headquarters Thursday.

"In their statements, both players stressed that Materazzi's comments had been defamatory but not of a racist nature," said FIFA in a statement.

"During the course of their hearings, both players also apologised to FIFA for their inappropriate behaviour and expressed their regret at the incident."

Zidane v Materazzi - Official FIFA report

Since Sunday evening the whole World has been debating what Italian defender Marco Materazzi said to Zinedine Zidane to make the retiring Frenchman react in the way he did. The French captain, in his last ever professional game, thrust his head into Materezzi's chest in Sunday's World Cup Final resulting in a red card and shame for Zidane. Today, with the help of Italian lip-reader Arturo Belladini, we can reveal what drove Zidane to self destruct;

Materazzi was seen to hold Zidane's shirt on the edge of the penalty box in extra-time at which point Zidane said "if you want my shirt so bad you can have it".

Materazzi responded "I dont want your shirt you m***** f*****. you're a f****** old man".

As they jog away Zidane is seen to laugh at this and it is unclear how he responded due to him having his back to the TV camera.

Materazzi then hit a volley of abuse:

"you should've quit 2 years ago, you're a f****** has-been".

"m***** f*****! your mum is a f****** muslim terrorist and you are to, f*** you old man f*** you".

"old man, this arena is not for you anymore m***** f****. Your sister is a whore and the whole Italian team has f***** her".

"f*** off you bald c*nt".

Zidane carries on jogging away.

"you are only good enough for f****** Aston Villa".

It's at this very point Zidane turned and head-butted him.

I think that Zee-Boy should have gotton the wack but the Wappo-Kid should stand clean. Here's why..To me the Italy player was clearly getting to prodding the Froginski into something. Trash Talk, man, Trash Talk...an old game in sports and Zee-boy took the bait. His actions were dispicable, he probably cost his county the World cup and even worse 90% of the world is laughing that Jack-Iraq gave him a metal....

I think that he sould have been arrested for assult but we know those marketing partners...

"Frog Legs and SourKraut" etc ain't even going to think about that!

Mo-Fo Zee-Boy ought to feel so discrased that he hides out in one of the coutries that end in "stan" where most people have last name that end in "ich"...

He already discraced county and given the world more opportunity to ply "Frog" jokes....

Zee-Boy, off to you room with no food, again!

FIFA should have taken stronger action against Zidane, by showing leniency they have sent a signal to others that it is acceptable to retaliate with violence if someone say's something you don't like. Apparently this jockey's horse called him a thick Irish twat and look what he did
