Cambodian capital launches public transport

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Reuters) -- City officials, diplomats and students boarded Phnom Penh's first organized public transport system on Thursday for a trial run through the chaotic Cambodian capital.

Twenty-two air conditioned buses, donated by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will begin transporting residents of the city on Friday.

"We want to keep order in the capital ... The population has increased 2.3 percent annually, but the roads and infrastructure have not been upgraded," Phnom Penh Governor Chea Sophara said at an inauguration ceremony on Thursday.

The number of traffic accidents in Phnom Penh -- home to more than one million people -- increased 33 percent in 2000.

Chea Sophara said there were an average of four accidents per day on the city streets, which are shared by right and left-hand drive automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, cyclos and pedestrians.

"We expect that within three years, we will be able to reduce traffic accidents by 70 percent," he said.

The buses will run along Phnom Penh's major thoroughfares and charge residents 800 riel ($0.21) per ride.
