wonderlust
I had a go at ordering a Vodka Martini at a few bars in Pattaya but just got blank stares and "huh?" "wha?" so ended up with Heinekens (as usual). Was I having a bad night or do the waitresses not have a clue? What's a good go go bar for cocktails? Old Hippie
I would think either a major hotel cocktail bar. Or a high end restaurant. Or, you could show them how to mix one at your favorite/regular bar, and maybe get one...wonder if any stock the vermoth? Playing James Bond were you? wonderlust
I was having a 007 moment and thought they would at least know what a Vodka Martini was. Surely you don't have to go upmarket in Thailand just for a Vodka Martini. I thought every bar tender and his dog would know what that was. Guy Himmaparn
A real bartender knows how to make at the minimum the standard cocktails and has a fully-stocked bar. Many (most?) gogos provide a few mixed drinks along with coffee, beer & sodas, but lack the ingredients to whip up anything more from Mr. Boston than the occasional margarita. A good cocktail includes a decent amount of liquour as well, not the thimbleful dosage usually poured at your local gogo. You were smart to stick with beer... ..
Good martinis can be had in hotel bars (as mentioned) or in Thaitanium on soi 22 (the frozen vodka bar). Bourbon St makes an acceptable one too (but no birds to pick up there). Otherwise, you should teach your fav bartender in your local(s) how to make it to your satisfaction. Most bars have vermouth and a cocktail shaker. I have done this with a couple of fav drinks of mine: a Manhattan and a Seabreeze. Dog: Bourbon St uses fresh fruit in their flavoured daqueris and margeritas. But no umbrellas cuz that would be gay. Cheers, SD

Old Hippie
I wonder if there would be a market for an upscale bar on Sukhumvit with leather couches, cigars, top end scotch, whiskey and proper cocktails...Pedros I think was an attempt at this, but not sure it is full on.
