Are the jap bars really no go? I wanna check out the the oak bar or other jap bar...what's the deal? Bar fineable? Or just sit and look pretty? Money is money after all....

I spent 6 months staying on Soi 22 a few years back and became friendly with some girls at one of the Japanese bars. You paid for the girls time and drinks at this place like most of the karaoke bars. These girls could also go with customers and I think the price was something similar to the go-go bars. At this bar, Japanese customers could bring non-Japanese customers, but non-Japanese could not go on their own.

Overt racism in practise...never noticed a bar turn away a jap from one of the farang centred bars...i guess that either says something about japanese people or the owners who run these establishments...i presume the former...

Ironic, most japs i know are hardly well off...

the jap bars on Soi 22 then seems to be the low key jap bars...as others (like Soi Taniya) are priced on the high side.

have been earlier this year in a japanese karaoke bar in China (with japanese guys; otherwise no admission) and was impressed, how well some girls could speak japanese. similar treat than other karaoke prices but prices were very high.

Japanese customers could bring non-Japanese customers, but non-Japanese could not go on their own.

That fits everything I've heard and read and observed from outside.

A few months ago, Stickman did a long report about Japanese bars on Soi Thaniya (Sala Daeng).

He was escorted in by a Japanese friend.

bgtp59's comments exactly match Stickman's report.

Tonight I went to soi 22 for dinner, and, in the process, walked past several of the Japanese bars.

The girls out front are consistently stunning: younger, slimmer, and far prettier than those on offer in the farang bars 100 meters away in the same soi.

When I walk past the farang bars, I get lots of smiles and "Helloooo-come-in-just-one-drink," and my arm gets a good massage as I walk past.

But, a few minutes further on, walking past the Japanese bars, those girls suddenly see more of interest in the overhead awning than in me.

Yet, 10 meters ahead of me, two Japanese men have stopped to study a menu.

They are getting polite but intense attention from all the "pretties" outside the next Japanese bar.

On average, the Japanese visitors seem to have more money and seem more willing to spend it, than the average farang.

Obviously then, the Japanese receive better quality in all services on offer here.

That is especially clear to see in Sukhumvit 22, where there is a bit of overlap between the farang and Japanese areas of Bangkok.

.

When you are in the neighborhood, take a walk around the block over to Sukhumvit Soi 20.

Anyone who enjoys "laid back", Pattaya-style, open-air, beer bars, would find it worthwhile to have a quick look into Soi 20.

Just behind the 7-Eleven on the corner, there are a three or four new bars that look quite pleasant, based on a walk past.

A bit larger and more relaxed than Queen's Park Plaza in Soi 22, but only a few bars.

Like Soi 22, in the past year, there have been a lot of changes for the better in Soi 20.

But one thing that hasn't changed is the superb German restaurant, Bei Otto.

If you like traditional European food -- not that "fusion cuisine" nonsense -- then you will be very happy at Bei Otto.

Among the finest Western restaurants in Bangkok.

Ah, yes, they also serve beer.

In your explorations around Soi 20-22, it is worth a visit for lunch or dinner.

chesa and bei otto are both on soi 22 (which is conveniently linked to soi 22 and 18 without having to use sukhumvit main road)

About soi 22:

I ventured recently into a few of the japanese "karaoke/clubs" and as usual I find the "quality" of the ladies superior to the ones you find in "farangs areas".

and no, the cocktail dresses do not blind me as I have been enough in soi 33.
