playtheblues
(not to anybody in particular) No, it's not about money. it's about national pride and face. Some people with power read forums like this and others where the Thais more or less straight up in the face are told that "we farang know much better then you, silly natives, what is best for you and your country, and see how much you lose if we don't come here and buy sex from your women and this and that.." Nobody, especially not the Thais like to hear things like this said in a very crude and condescending way straight up in the face.
ChristianTroy
Nobody, especially not the Thais like to hear things like this said in a very crude and condescending way straight up in the face. Typical case of Som Nam Na? There are always 2 ways how you can take advice 1) you take the criticism and you improve the obvious wrong! 2) or you show false pride and keep on struggeling! What would happen if the poor people weren't poor anymore, if everybody would have a job in a farang company? Girls wouldn't have to sell their pussies anymore and the tourists would go somewhere else! The country depends on the tourism! Thailand is aknowledged as a poor hooker country all over the world. All you need to do to proof this term is to tell your farang wife/girlfriend/love interest that you are going to Thailand for 3 weeks and see her reaction, the world doesn't know much more about this country! Don't forget that Farang money goes often directly into Isaan Family Bank Accounts! Thais don't think from A to C they think from A to B! It has less to do with pride and face. Thais upcountry would REVOLT against too many farang companies and this has nothing to do with pride or face it has everything to do with beeing scared because they know shit, they are uneducated farmers and the most have never seen a farang in real life! We are like aliens to them and less educated people always fear what they don't know! The government PRETENDS that we can't own shit or live there! In fact we do, we pay strawmen to sign the property contract and the company contracts and pay them off! yada yada yada I could go on and on with that, my NZ mate is just setting up a factory and all he needed was to pay the right people! The same goes for visas, I am 34 and shouldnt have a valid reason to live there, i payed a bkk visa lawyer which was recommended by the pattaya expat club, this guy knows who to bribe to get a working permit, resident visa yada yada yada! It is Thailand, you got money - you get what you want!
texascity
I think the Hawaii situition is what Thai want to avoid.. & I agree with the protection of Thai interests. Nips & Farangs own much the prime real Hawaiin estate & the native people are left out. It is wise for the Thai to not allow that to happen. IMHO, the same educated Thai that hated Mr. T also hold most Farangs in contempt. the revolving & confusing criteria for (especially retirement in my case) visas is actually the part of the Thai culture I'd like to avoid. there is a little 'tuk tuk driver' intentional obtuseness embeded deep in the Thai thought process. I have a 'friend', a Chula grad that just finished Thammasat Law, that HATES lower Sukhumvet, all of Pattaya (will not go to Patttaya) & most things farang. she also hated Mr. T .. the tone of her last email regarding visa criteria indicated glee that long term farangs are being caused difficulty & possibly will made to disappear. how many guys made monthly visa runs for years & are now facing a life outside LOS? I took a visa run bus to the Cambodian border last month .. what a motley crew that bus load was (myself included!) & what an dusty 'wild wild west' border crossing it is .. Doc Holiday would be at home on that dusty path / road.
playtheblues
Do you put it like that to the immigration officer? Probably you woyld say not, you follow general advise to be polite, calm and make a positive impression. But in fact you talked to him indirectly by your posting. Mekong
Wonder how this 3-month in the bank will affect folks already on retirement visas. I have a friend who should find out next week. He's been here over 20 years and has 5 or 6 million baht he keeps in 5% interest promisary notes. He transfers 800,000 into a crap paying ordinary bank account whenever he renews his retirement visa. He says if they want him to keep that 800,000 in an account at only 1.5 to 2% interest, they had damn well better pay him the difference! Sorry Flash have you done the Maths on that? 5 minus 1.5 = 3.5 it is for 3 months (0.25 of a year) so effectivly 0.875% lost interest on 800K, or 7000 THB / Annum. Sorry if someone whinges about less than 20 Baht / Day then I don't really believe that they are capable of surviving as an expat outside the umbrella of their own nanny state. IMHO the only people who are getting hot under the collar about visa rule changes are the very people who are abusing the system. Now if the 3 Million Baht Investment Visa was being withdrawn, that would be differnent, but any investment visa issued before Oct 2006 will be renewed on that basis indefinately, no argument. 800K or a pensiom income of 80K / Month at age 50 plus jeez I would never consider retiring on such a pittance. 400K bank balance for an OM Visa (ouch 10 Baht a day lost Interest) what a laugh. I have said ever since I decided to live here 16 years ago, Thailand is a Casino, put in what you can afford to loose ... Maybe my Sig Line makes sense. Flash This is not a Dig at you ... Just a general remark against all the negative comments in general.
Khun_Kong
... They could save money by buying products at world market prices rather than having to prop up local monopolies owned by vested interests. ... I think this may play a key role.
