keyboard question

Guest

Recommended Posts

I just bought a new keyboard. It has these extra button : wake up, sleep, power. However when pressing them nothing happens. I have no 'manual'. Is there anything I can do to activate these buttons. It is not a big issue, but would be a pleasant feature if possible to activate.

most of the time keyboards like the one you describe either:

a - are proprietary, e.g. they will only work with the type of computer they were designed for (a compaq keyboard w/ a compaq pc.)

or

b - require software drivers to activate the special function keys. I'd check to see if the keyboard mfg has a website, and if there are any drivers available for it.

Just out of curiosity, who made the kb?

Thanks. Good advice. The company is called Siam United High-Tech. The keyboard bought of the rack at Data IT, Pantip Plaza. I found their website, quite good actually but nothing about drivers, so I sent an e-mail to the technical support man. Maybe I will get a reply. If you are really interested in it, this is the URL (www.suhkeyboard.com)

I got this excellent reply (among more):

If your situation is not any one of the above (you are using Window98,

WindowsMe, or Windows2000), please check at Control Panel--System--Device

Manager and under System Device. You should see ACPI system button, Power

Management Controller, and Advanced Configuration and Powe Interface (ACPI)

BIOS, otherwise these buttons do not work. The safest thing you can try to

make these devices shown is reinstall Window with this command "setup /pj"

Note:Some mainboard with Windows98, these buttons do not work like they are

intended to. For example, the computer may go to sleep mode by hitting

Sleep or Power button.

For the new PC with new Operating system (Windows Me and above), these

button (power, sleep, and wake) will work perfectly.

The ACPI BIOS is indeed not installed on my computer and I will not reinstall Windows, to much trouble. Just for your technical curiosity.
