There I was trying to find a porno site to get a los fix and found something called uh-oh.com however when I opened a page my screen was Captured by ?? several pop-ups followed by a page that filled the complete screen. no matter what I did I could not get rid of it and so had to pull the plug on my machine.

I am running a pent 2 with win 98 (2nd edit)and a macafee fire wall.

Any bright guys out there able to tell me what I can do to stop it, or, solve it if it happens again. crazy.gif" border="0crazy.gif" border="0

Hi!

Hi this is a common practice among porno sites. I know how you feel. It pisses me off so much that I so much that I sometimes consider taking up hacking just so I can bring their bloody site down. I'm especially annoyed when I'm lured there by a link that was supposed to go somwhere else.

What happens is that they define an 'exit' function in JavaScript that will open one or more new windows when you try to back out of the site.

The only way to stop this is to turn of JavaScript in the browser.

In Netscape this is done by choosing 'Edit->Preferances-Advanced' and unchecking Enable JavaScript. I can never remember how it is done on MSIE as try not to use it for dubious sites but there must be someone else on the board that knows.

Another thing you should do when visiting risky sites is turn of Java. While JavaScript can be extremely annoying and dangerous even, Java is much worse. You would be amazed if you knew what a skilled programmer can do with it. They can read and alter information stored on your disks. They can erase your disks or plant viruses and trojans.

Your firewall can do nothing in this case as you have already accepted the connection.

If the situation you described occurs you should not have to reboot your computer. Just call up the task manager with 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' nad kill the tasks.

ALHOLK,

Thanks, virus checker found a trojan on reboot. I will now follow your advice re Java & Script. After that I shall visit the site and see what the score is.

Thanks again

ukdog, are you running IE? If you ever get a porno pop-up with no title bar (in other words, no close box to click) you can just Ctrl-W to close the window. In fact, Ctrl-W is a much faster way to kill surprise windows since you don't have to aim your mouse all over.

ALHOLK & Bohocasia,

Yes I am useing IE and as you say ctrl-w does the job as well, so thanks.

I disabled java/jscript then went back to the site, I still got the screen capture but was able to get rid of it. (violent thoughts keep running through my head though). now however I have run into a new problem, After exciting the site I noticed that I had new programs showing on my task bar, "Instant Pleasure" & "Instant access" I deleted them only to find them on my start menu and in my windows list. I think I have now removed all of them but this has caused me some concern. Do I have to stop surfing, as you can tell I am a wee virgin, or is there something I can do to stop this?

Both of them were dialler programs.

Thanks guys

Hi!

Although I am a software engineer I'm not focused on the internet so I'm not sure.

The best advice I can give you is to make sure that sound is enabled on your modem if that's what your using. If you're on cable or a DSL a dialer can't do any harm. If you hear the modem dialing shut it down immediately. Dialer programs can be very costly.

Are you sure that you disabled both Java and JavaScript. Another thought, MSIE supports ActiveX which can be at least as dangerous as

java.

If you look at the security tab in the intenet options there is a number of settings that you can fiddle with.

As I said I'm not very good at this and seldom use the IE to visit shady sites. I know there are other computer professionals on the board. Some of them must know more about this than I do.

ALHOLK,

Sorry to be a real pain but thats twice you mentioned not useing IE for porn sites. Is there a alternative?, why not IE? I use a broad band connection (ADSL)with a 24/7 connection.

Do not know where your stationed but if its BKK I'll be there on the 4/12/01 and would welcome the chance to repay you with a beer or two.

Cheers

Hi!

ukdog

There are several reasons I don't use IE to visit shady websites.

1. Like many software engineers I'm biased against MicroShaft programs.

2. Being a MS program it is likely to be more tightly linked to the OS. I often surf from corporate networks so covering my tracks is sometimes of importance.

3. I know Netscape better as I started out surfing with it (well Mosaic actaully but thats history).

Is there a alternative?,

Yes, I have already mentioned Netscape. Another one is Opera which is much liked by those who use it.

Unfortunately I'm stationed in Stockholm (it's bloody snowing). I won't be in Thailand until 22/12/01. I will skip BKK altogether and head straight for Pattaya.

Thanks Guys,

Just some feed-back, I did as you suggested bohicasia, went into security and disabled everything then started enabling one thing at a time followed by visiting a known bad site. Long winded but it has solved the problem.

I am also going to look into opera now that I have sorted out this problem.

Thanks again

ukdog, it's weird that those dialer programs, or any programs, have installed and executed. Well, not weird, but you've either clicked something to give them permisiion to do so, or you've got something set in your Internet Control Panel that allows them to do so. I'm sorry I can't recall exactly the name of the widget that turns this off, but look in the ICP under both "Security" and "Advanced" tabs and you should find the switch that disables it. Then go back to the site that loaded the dialer and make sure your changes worked. And as you know, some settings require you to restart your browser to take effect.
