Help, my screen keeps getting captured

Hi,

Another pet hate of mine (besides the already mentioned pop-up windows) are sites that automatically add links to my bookmarks list. Even worse are the ones that change my start up page.

No clue how to prevent them from doing this, since I don't want to switch of JavaScript. Ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

BTW, besides a firewall I also run a cookiewall. You would be surprised how many cookies are send, and it's not even the pornsites that are the worst offenders here. It's the big news and content sites.

Finally, since Opera was mentioned, does anybody know how to get it to automatically bring up my 'Dial-up connection' window?

Sanuk!

Hi!

I have never used Opera so I can't help yoy there. This will probably change when I get my ADSL connection at home.

I edit my cookie file manually which is one reason that I prefer Netscape. The text in the file header normally says that this can't be done as the file is generated. This howeve is BS as the file foarmat is real simple.

I don't know of any easy way to avoid sites setting bookmarks without disableing JavaScript. You could of course backup your bookmark file and then restore it when you are finnished surfing. Of course you would have to transfer any bookmark you have set during the session manually to the old file.

Oter things that piss me off big time is when a website changes my history list so I can't go back.

Some sites start a browser window in minimized mode that you will miss more often than not. This virtually invisible window contains a timer function that will open a full screen window after 10 - 15 minutes normally containing adult material. According to a friend Opera can cope with this problem.

regards

ALHOLK

Don't know if it'll help you but you might want to take a look at Webwasher (Webwasher.com). I've been using it with NS for several years and do not have any of the problems you describe. I also use ZoneAlarm as a firewall. ALso, I access the Uh Oh site, once in a while, without any problems.

Great, I had downloaded a bit of software that stopped pop-ups but after your post visited and downloaded Webwasher. So far nothing but good to say regards this program.

Absolutely no problems setting it up and I have experienced faster load times, even with a adsl connection, since installing it.

Disabling javascript, (prior to webwasher) caused some pages not to load so I tended to skip them rather than keep turning scripting on and off, Webwasher seems to have solved that problem as well.

Another advantage I am seeing is that when useing, Internet Cleanup at the end of a session I find that there are no temp files, cookies or caches to clean, leaving me only the history to clean.

Thanks

I have Opera 6.0 on a W98 box and dial on demand works fine. Same is the case with my Linux computer. Perhaps M$ doesn't wan't you to use Opera wink.gif" border="0. On my version of Opera there is a little panel next to the advertisement that identifies the $USER-AGENT (i.e. which browser it identifies itself as) If that is on the Windows version try clicking on until it says "Identify as MSIE 5.0" enter a URL and see if that brings up the dialer.

KS,

The sites that make themselves your home page without your permission are exploiting a security hole in older versions of IE.

Microsoft has now plugged these. Turning off java will not stop it. Plus you need java running to enjoy all the feature of the message board.

Update your version of window by visiting the Microsoft site and you will install all the latest security bugs.

Also I run Norton Antiv virus with script blocking turned on. Every so often it will tell me it has block nasty code in a web page.

Finally I'mn glad someone mentioned ctrl - w as it is a quick and easy way to close out pop-ups.

Microsoft Downloads, try the menu in the left hand bar

No luck. Opera was already set to identify itself as IE, and I even made it my default browser. All to no avail

Yeh that was a long shot the $USER-AGENT variable is really meant to help web servers to decide what to spit back at you. I have been using Opera for Linux for a few days now and its real swell compared to Moz, and I have been using that since, well Mosaic, right up to Mozilla 0.9.6 which we have been less than satisfied with because it chokes on the Malay menus.

Pop Ups: Opera 6 has the option of refusing pop-ups in the quick options menu, [F12] on mine. As to the bug in IE, if stump-dog is referring to the bug that allows the browser to execute javascript placed in the comment file of image files, I think just GIF, ditto for Netscape, you should upgrade.

I use a freeware program called pop-up stopper. It has all sorts of convenient features and is easy to disable temporarily.

But on the screen capture, I found that the Esc key sometime breaks the loop, right-clicking the open browser windows on the taskbar and then closing them, and finally if all else fails, CTRL-ALT-DELETE one time and close the browser windows by ending the tasks.
