Jimmy_S
Due to Thailand's famous IMEI blocking policy most 'foreign' GSM phone won't work. I was first told the IMEI has to be registered with the telco's. This made it a bit hard to find one that would work, however I'm now told that they are allocated in block, as provided by the importers of phones. Does anyone have any information on valid numbers or ranges of numbers, or know where to find them?
Straycat
I am afraid I do not know. A good starting point might be the following web sites: mobile.box.sk and www.connectworld.net/wwwboard/index.html For other peoples enlightment(?), however, I can tell what an IMEI number is: IMEI Almost always found behind the battery, International Mobile Equipment Identity is a unique number given to every single mobile phone. IMEI numbers of cellular phones connected to a GSM network are stored in a database (EIR - Equipment Identity Register) containing all valid mobile phone equipment. When a phone is reported stolen or is not type approved, the number is marked invalid. Checking Your IMEI Number: Press *#06# This should return a 15 character number, which is the same as the one on the back of the phone. It is made up as follows. XXXXXX XX XXXXXX X TAC FAC SNR SP TAC = Type Approval Code (first 2 digits = country code of the approval-country ) FAC = Final Assembly Code (01,02 = AEG) (10,20 Nokia) (40,41,44 Siemens) (30 Ericsson) (50 Bosch) (51 Sony,Siemens,Ericsson) (60 Alcatel) (65 AEG) (70 Sagem) (75 Dancall) (80 Philips) (85 Panasonic) SNR = Serial Number SP = Spare (always "0") Source: http://www.buyncell.com/gsminfo/imei.shtml How to change the IMEI number is explained here (in Thai): http://saltnlight-e.com/change.htm Searching on Internet regarding these issues will inevitably give a lot of results with Eastern European and Russian web sites. The purpose of the IMEI is certainly to deter black and grey marketing of phones. How well this works is another question since the IMEI is stored on a programmable ROM chip. If I recall there were some older nokia's that could be modified directly from the phones keypad, this however is not the case most often. The procedure will likely require a cable and some third party software. A full service grey market shop should be able to do it for you.
