How to cover up web footprints?

Does anyone know how to "erase your footprints" from a web-surfing session?

What I mean is, the computer keeps a record of what websites you visited. I use Internet Explorer v5.5 and the browser keeps a record in the HISTORY menu AND also in the ADDRESS field at the top of the screen.

There is probably some easy method to erase both sets of data, but I can't figure it.

Yes, there is a very easy way to erase this data.

In Internet Explorer - point your mouse to the upper menu. Choose "tools", then "internet options". At the first screen you see (you should be under the "general" heading), you can erase both cache content and history.

(disclaimer: I do not have an English version of Internet Explorer and I may be wrong concerning the the exact wordings in the menu)

Hi!

Merely deleting "history" and "temporary internet files" is not enough if you really want to cover your tracks. Lots of information is still in the registry.

If you want to cover your tracks for someone else than your computer illiterate wife or girlfriend you should use a program like "Evidence Eliminator" or Windows Washer". Both will clean out MSIE and NetScape regarding history, cache etc. They will also erase traces in other programs like media player if you have been watching naughty movies (which you ofcourse haven't wink.gif" border="0 )

Another thing to think of is that a deleted file is rather easy to recreate in many cases. Good programs to take care of this problem are "Eraser"(free) and "BCWipe". Both these programs will erase files so they can't be undeleted. They will also take care of unused diskspace, file slack and paging files. The latter being a security hazard that is little known even to frequent computer users. Eraser at least and probably BCWipe as well are capable of erasing files so not even major intelligence agencies can recreate them.

A god link site to find some of these as well as many other programs is:

This is only a link site and you won't find any cracks or serials here.

Thank you db_sed_aloha and everyone for your input.

Great post db, very informative. Looks like I'll have to put aside a weekend to practice this on my own PC.

BTW, I wasn't so much worrried about porn sites. But when using internet cafe machines, revealing passwords to websites that have no log-off.

Hi,

Yep, DB is definitely back smile.gif" border="0

With regards to cookies, I use a little program called CookieWall (forgot where I downloaded it, but try a search for this name).

Everytime a new cookie appears I have three options: "Always delete", "Temporarily accept", or "Accept".

It is sometimes a bit of a pain clicking through 5-6 messages (yes, some news/content sites have that many cookies), but it beats being tracked all over the 'Net.

Sanuk!
