LCD Vs. Plasma

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Thanks. Have not seen any yet (at least not that I am aware of).

Edit:

Bit of googling found this article: http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/6216/52/

It mentions "with units set to be available in stores by late 2007 or early 2008."

Nice photo comparing laser with plasma and explanation of the differences as well.

Sounds *very* good, but unfortunately they are still about a year away it sounds :(

Sanuk!

The technology has been "about a year away" for a few years running now ...

Possibly the larger power consumption of plasma will be a factor also.

Exactly that will be the reason in a couple of years why they will push another technology such as laser, AFTER they have sold all their plasma panels :)

About the LCD, Plasma discussion, there is not much to discuss since the decissions have been made already at the IFA 2006. After the world cup the companies got the stats they needed since in every 4th household the old big tvs got replaced with flatscreens.

The major companies are going for Plasma in the big panel segment, Sony, LG, Samsung as the 3 I can recall.

Phillips will push the LCD more but won't back off the plasma market

Sony announced that the LCDs are not very ideal for the new game consoles like their Playstation 3 or xbox 360.

However, I repeat myself, smaller screens will be LCD dominated and the bigger ones Plasma dominated!

The good news is that everything will be available, thos who want high end panels will be able to buy giant LCD panels, even laser technology :) The bestseller will be the panels that the companies decide to be the bestseller, they advertise them and the salesman will get the highest comission. No question which one he will recommend!

No matter what, the quality is getting better and that is good for us!

And for those who are trying to decide between Plasma and LCD who haven't seen the quality of HDTV on both panel types, wait before you judge, you just have seen 1/3 of the panels potential!

CT,

How can we benefit of this HDTV quality on a Pioneer plasma please?

Cheers,

Not sure if I understand the question:

Depending on where you live you should be able to pick up HDTV signals via sattelite, what you need is a HDTV Sattelite or cable receiver! You basically can get every program in the world if you are willing to pay the price ;)

In Germany we had to wait 4 years I think to get it, my first HDTV signal I got with the xbox 360 connected to my media center pc. I had to download movies or demos from the net or xbox marketplace trailers. 2 weeks before the world cup we finally got hdtv on cable tv and i bought a reciver, still only 5 channels, the Astra Demo Channel, HD1, HD HIT (local channel) and Premiere (pay TV like HBO) came with 3 channels, Discovery HD, Movies and Sports. There are 2 more channels Pro7 and Sat1 which simultanously broacasting in HDTV but 99% is still in SD format but whenever the get a hold on a new US show such as Lost or Desperate Housewifes they show it in 720p the same goes for movies which aren't older than 3 years!

In Thailand it is not so easy but possible to get signals from all over the world you either know how to hack the smart cards or you pay a lot and at least I needed an expert to set up the bowl.

Best way to test the potential is to rent an xbox360 and hook it to the internet, download some movie trailers which are only in 720p but good enough to replace the idea that a DVD is delivering a perfect picture. There will or is already a HD-DVD drive available for xbox360 and you will be able to watch movies in 1080i.

I stands for interlaced and is right now the standard. The new panels will be full HD 1080p which is another very noticable difference!

Hmm, maybe a very easy way to check out the difference is to set back your computer screen settings to 640x480 and then set it to the highest possible resolution and you get an idea how much reolution changes the picture, it is finer and the colours are stronger the picture becomes deeper!

thats how the difference looks like in mini format

what appears as a fake on the right is actually the truth just that you can se it better on your computer screen and you don't sit as close on your TV like on a computer! SD is a blurry mess compared to HDTV

Thanks CT,

actually I didn't quite understand the question or the issue myself...mostly looking to have a better resolution while watching DVDs as I don't download movies from the net except some porn on the laptop. Think we get 1080 with this plasma ,a very recent Pioneer, much better picture quality than what I'm used to, yet I wouldn't mind seeing it improved.

Not even sure how it works with TV, satellite or whatever, as we're watching all channels through our internet provider. Sould an Xbox or any other device be helpful?

Thanks to those who can bring some light in this technological maze!

You are reading the wrong news! Believe me you do, the information you have gathered isn't true. Sony is very agressive against LCD. Only time will tell, lets sit it out and talk about it later!

Kojis69

If you are watching all channels via IPTV you should be able to receive some hdtv signals, it only works if you have the right cables like HDMI / DVI / or component (analog to digital hdtv, lower quality) Best thing you can do is to call your provider and ask him if there is any HDTV signal for you. If yes check the inputs on your receiver and buy the cable, most likely a HDMI or DVI cable an dyou are all set up!

I wouldn't buy an xbox unless you like to play, rent it if you can if not and if you really wanna be a multimedia super geek buy a media center pc or a media center set top box but this only makes sense if you wanna stream your computer content in the living room! You also can record tv shows on hard disk with that setup! I like it buy I am geeky as hell! You see my living room and you think the space shuttle is a kindergarden!

From the SONY annual report,

Higher sales were recorded for liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions, including the BRAVIA line, which registered brisk sales worldwide, and LCD rear-projection televisions, which saw sales increase particularly in the US. In contrast, sales of cathode ray tube (CRT) and plasma televisions fell.

Also,

There was a decline in sales of CRT televisions, due to the continued shift in demand towards flat panel televisions, and plasma televisions, where new product development has been terminated.

So will you believe the Sony executives that plasma development has stopped?

No because I know the context. Plasma technology is developed by Hitachi, Matsushita Electric aka Panasonic, Pioneer. Those who bought a Sony Plasma Flatscreen have actually bought a Panasonic TV. Sony and Siemens are well known for labeling other companies products. Sony therefore is helping to develop the Carbon Nanotube technology which is a different type of liqid display as we know it, alledgedly the best possible picture! Those companies mentionend above aren't having their own labs, they invest into the APDC (Advanced PDP Development Center Corporation) The entire industry is buying the plasma licenses from them since 2003. It is just like with computers, there are a lot of labels but the standard consumer products are all the same shit just with different names!

Northern America and Australia has a way better market in LCDs, especially the USA doesn't have 1 TV per household they have 2 or 3 smaller ones, that caters the LCD, I assume your quoted article is from one of these countries. In Europe, Asia, Africa (yes they have TV too) the Plasma is going to be the standard because of the earlier availability of bigger panels. The request of the customers is to get bigger and cheaper panels above 50" Plasma TVs will be the first who can deliver both features. Alledgedly the Carbon technology will very light, slim and cheap once it is released! Might change things again.

Sony might not develop new models for N. America but they have just 6 new ones announced for europe 6 more to come in fall. Also it isn't Sony who is dominating the market, They are selling a lot of the smaller TVs. It was Sir Howard Stringer (boss of Sony) himself who said that LCD Panels wouldn't be very impressive with the Playstation3 because of the lower refresh rate and the tremendous speed in the games!

Fact is that the people can't buy a new TV every year and especially since the USA sold more LCDs the companies are sitting on their Plasma Panels and they want their cut. What they develop doesn't matter, if there are 5 million Plasma Panels they will tell us it is the Holy Cow and exactly that is what is going to happen at least for the next couple of years and especially at the cinema big panel market!

After that there might come the carbon technology or the laser or something entirely different! Fact is the most people who dumped their CRT are not buying anything new in the next 3 to 4 years!
