Tipping - Hotel Housekeeping

Service Charges in restaurants is one to watch for. Read the small print - if you miss out on the service charge on the menu you end up paying a service charge and leaving a tip. I did this for a few days in Bkk once until I realised I was paying twice. The waitress won't tell you either if you make a mistake. They will just take the tip and smile.

Tipping maids - yes tip from the start and make it a point of saying to her look after extra towels etc and make sure you leave something every day or so.

No point leaving money on the last day - you're not going to get value for your money then.

If staying in 5* a $ per day per guest is / was usual. You can get all you want by pressing the "at your service" button' date=' at least in the Marriott.[/quote']

Marriott has all service charges and tip included! The bosses say "no need to tip"

Guess what.....! They only pay out 70% of the service fees charged from their customers!

Interesting as I assumed it all went to the company. Out of that they then pay salaries and any potential extras or bonuses.

I don't actually see how they could apportion it at a percentage as staff have to be paid whether the hotel is full or empty. Prehaps the 70% if based on 70& occupancy rates ? I don't know.

Who told you about that CT ?

My best mate was going to Marriott for 3 years almost every 2nd month before he opened his factory in Sri Racha and got a condo. He made many friends there over the years, including Dylan who is one of the managers. When I was waiting for my Condo to be finished I moved into a suite for almost 2 months and got an extreme special rate! My mate however hooked up with the VIP Care girl and things got serious (Moo Noi met her briefly) Through her I met "illegally" all the hot chicks that work there. One of them almost became my lady. She recently got promoted to a back office supervisor, every reservation runs through her workstation!

I know 9 ladies, the manager and the chef (hilarious guy) personally and have slept a couple of times at the Marriott Dorm. They all told me the same. The basic salary is 8,000 baht and the bonus is between 6,000 baht to 7,000 baht It depends on the job description of the employee! The VIP girl (checks in, escorts and takes care) is not involved into any business transaction, she gets the bonuses according to the total amount of service charges! A Lady that works at Elephant bar gets her bonuses according to the service charges on the drinks and the food. You don't pay cash, you sign your tap and get charged when you check out. On the receipt you can tip them, all the tip goes into one account ad will be equally splitted among the bartenders, sick days will be deducted. In Marriott there is a lot of up selling going on because the more they sell the more they get!

30% of the service charges are going into a hold back account and are used to buy replacements, like broken glasses, chairs etc...

I don't always tip, but if I'm happy with the place I will. 40 baht/day is reasonable, more if I leave a mess.

Much better to do it daily rather than waiting until the end of your stay, for two reasons. (1) the staffs rotate and have off days, and (2) they will often show their appreciation by giving premium service during your stay if you've been leaving tips (extra candies, fruits, water, towels, etc., plus more smiles and attentive service). One place I stayed, the maids left a thank you note (in terrible English, but rather cute) along with a towel folded up to look like a swan left on top of the TV.

I have never tipped the maids money.

I used to however leave all the stuff I had accumulated over a trip lasting several months that I did not want to take back home, neatly stacked / packaged in carrier bags BY the bin........including books that would amount to several thousand bahts worth of stuff......that is until the soon to be Mrs David realised what was going on and "claimed" anything and everything I did not want :smirk:

When I pointed out that the Cleaners were now missing out her reaction was basically: "Tough shit"

A couple of years ago I found the future Mrs David doing the same thing with her cosmetics and bits and pieces of clothing that was purely "working wear".....she explained she did not need them anymore and really did not want them (never one for cosmetics or "girly stuff"), but she did not want to throw them away as the Cleaners could sell most things on Sukhumvit to BG's.........at the time I was still kinda skeptical, but the seriousness to which she took to the task over several weeks does seem to have turned out to be genuine......

I would guess that Mr Farang can often throw stuff away in Hotel Rooms that can be sold to someone for a few Baht.

I used to leave a tip under the pillow until a maid told me that it is the first place the "mini-bar" checker looks. Now I leave it in the bathroom under the pile of used towels.

If you're staying at the Nana Hotel, leave the tip under the bed. The "mini bar" checker never looks down there. :D

Then again, neither does anyone else, judging by the used condom, single cufflink, bottle tops, cobwebs, assorted coins and broken fountain pen that were under my bed last time I stayed there and was on my hands and knees fruitlessly hunting for a dropped contact lens. :doah:

Like an above poster, I hand a tip to the cleaner(s) in person, preferably on the first day of my stay. By the time I stagger out of bed, they're always somewhere nearby waiting to get access to my room anyway. :drunk:

What color and size were those 'condoms'?

The one under the bed? It was off-white. It was ripped as well, so no point rinsing it out and re-using it. I just left it where it was, mate. :nono:

That was only 3 years ago, so it'll still be there, probably â?? Room 631 â?? if you carry a puncture repair kit.
