As an Engineer who has had run ins with beuracratic management on more than one occasion it is actually very close to the truth and that is what makes it so funny.

But - if we let you engineers sell....

 

Customer: "I need to buy this program for our company."

 

Engineer: "Ok, after customization and testing, it will be ready in about 18 months"

 

Customer: "Oh, sorry then - we need it now"

 

You need a combination of a good sales/marketing person and even better engineers/software developers.

on marketing... the ex was big on marketing, reasonably high up in a decent sized casino... her mantra was to promise the customer (punter) everything and anything he/she wanted. Whether or not it was possible was neither here nor there. Promise the world to keep em coming.

Hi,

 

I can easily turn that around :)

 

Customer: "I need to buy this program for our company, but I also need it to do xxx, yyy and zzz. Does it do that?"

 

Sales person (without asking anyone and without knowing anything): "Sure, no problem. Just sign here."

 

Engineer to sales person: "It doesn't do that and adding it will take 3 months."

 

Sales person to engineer: "Well, the customer has already signed so just do it."

No argument there. The biggest problem I see is that neither of the groups really know what the other does. However, it is *inevitably* the engineers that get the shit *after* the sales person has already gotten his commission for making a sales based on promises he himself doesn't have to keep.

Bingo! And who gets to fulfill those promises or get shat upon if they are not met? The sales person who made them? Yeah, right!
