Ex-Thai PM's passport stolen in Moscow

Sorry if this is a couple of weeks late, but I just ran across this.

My Question:

- Why is a Thai policeman traveling with the former PM? (Is there really an arms-length relationship between the current government and the former PM?).

My Comments:

1. It must be nice to be able to travel around the world, keeping over US$8,000 in cash in one's day pack.

2. Its nice to see that the Thai embassy was willing to quickly replace his travel documents. Very professional.

BANGKOK, Thailand (Reuters) -- Ousted Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra lost his passport, foreign currency worth $8,700 and a video camera when a thief stole his bag at a fast food restaurant in Moscow, his spokesman said on Friday.

The bag was stolen before Thaksin was to receive an honorary doctorate degree from Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics, said the spokesman, who declined to be identified.

"The handbag with his Thai passport and UK visa in it was stolen," the spokesman said.

"It was carried by a Thai policeman who traveled with him. A former prime minister like him won't have to carry his own bag," said the spokesman, denying Thai newspaper reports the belongings were worth more than 1 million baht ($30,600).

Foreign Ministry spokesman Piriya Khempon confirmed that Thaksin's passport had been stolen and said that the Thai embassy in Moscow had issued him a temporary travel document.

The Thai papers said he was accompanied by "an aide". No mention of a Thai policeman. Thai papers also reported his loss at about 1.2 million baht. If he only had US$8,700 in cash, that was one damned expensive camera! Hmmm ...

The major questions are:

1. What has Mr T done to receive an honourary degree? (Buy it?)

2. Why is he "dining" in a fast food "restaurant"? (Maybe he got his daughter a job at a McDonalds in Moscow?)

p.s. << Foreign Ministry spokesman Piriya Khempon confirmed that Thaksin's passport had been stolen and said that the Thai embassy in Moscow had issued him a temporary travel document. >>

A "temporary travel document" is hardly the same as the diplomatic passport he had. The govmt wanted to cancel that passport too.
