Luktung/Morlam venues in Bangkok?

They all have a smaller slice of the cake. Same with comedy teams. More and more appearing and everyone earns less. Also quality goes backwards because everyone copies everyone else. So less people interested etc etc etc this goes for comedy, lukthung, morlam etc.

Thais are getting fed up with the same old same old (at least the Isaan girls I speak with) They rather listen to Potato, the Clash, Bodyslam, Big Ass etc. Or watch the big tv comedians.

Some truth in this but go to Nok Noi tonight and you will not be able to get a look in due to her popularity. While there is a lot of copying (loads of clone tai oratai girls now) and even mee panda has been copied twice, there is also a lot of inovation driven by the fierce competition, and always some new kind of sound as with Bowee and the very popular Ponglang Sa orn. I would still like to see evidence of luktung being very much more popular from accademic research. Mee Panda is a bloody good laugh!

It would be interesting to read of some of your insights into thai humour as I am sure it's a mystery to most of us. Saw Mum and Eddy yesterday along with many other top jokers. A journalist named Surin died last month and a huge benefit concert was held for him at Bangkapi many singers including Fon, Monsit, Janet Keaw, Appaporn, Eckachi, Cyia Meechai and sister, Sunaree, Luknok and loads of others. Also some very famous string and life songs acts including Carabao who I must say was very good playing the saaw

The comics are something I will never understand, one guys speciality seemed to be making pig noises! Did you ever see the black comic with dreadlocks? he appeared at thai cultural centre in May at Fons big concerts and is on the VCD. His charachter gets the blame for a fire and he's carted off in handcuffs. I would think there is some opportunity for falangs at this game as few doing it.

Sanam Luang was a bit dissapointing this year, fighting at Grammy stage but RS stage was better. Even the fireworks seemed poor compared to other years, maybe they are saving them up for Dec.

The black guy is Joey from Ghana (if he had long dreadlocks and isn't a lookkreung then he is Joeyboy from Isaan) if he had short dreadlocklike hair he would have been Mike from my time, he is from Ubon.

And the one making pig noises is most probably Charlie from my team, he is short and bald. Unfortunately in the last 2 months I was abroad many times and I missed all of this :(.

There have been many farangs doing comedy, at least trying to do it. Most fail. Not because they are not funny enough but because they want to play by their own rules and not by Thai rules (they try to tell the bosses of the teams what to do! A no no in Thai culture)

Also if you want to do it the Thais expect you to always be there! 24/7 as all of them have no other jobs besides comedy. This gets me in trouble sometimes as I have another job and I cannot make it sometimes. Although I am lucky with my boss, he actually understands I cannot life on a few hundred baht a day. The group manager hats me for it though he feels I should put aside everything else!

It looks nice but it is not for the fainthearted. You must have a lot of commitment and be willing to put up with a lot of bullshit!

If he wears a tux and red lipstick thats him, never seen do many comics together. The guy who died was a muslim bloke, they collected over one million baht for his family so he must have been well respected. Odd though not one grammy singer was there.

The CD companies have the singers by the balls, I know one very famous singer who produced her own CD last year-not one shop would stock it due to pressure from the companies. They should all get together and start their own company -sort of like united artists.

Hope to see you performing one day.

Yep that is Charlie! He doesn't make pignoises, but toadnoises. That is his act, toad. It is pretty normal if a comedian dies that all comedians come and perform on his funeral. I have done it two times. I missed on this big one because I was abroad. There are many other times when all groups come together to help for a cause. We went to the hospital when the king was there and we sang under his window for instance.

And if you want to see me perform just come to Rama IX cafe on a wednesday or sunday evening. We are usually the 1st, 2nd or 3rd act on. Comedy starts between 20.30 and 20.45
