Damned OPEC started prices really climbing when they decided to "sock it to the west" around 1974. Since the price of transportation went up so much, prices in Thailand began climbing. Many things nearly doubled. Second class train fare Phitsanulok-Bangkok had been about 35 baht. It promptly went to 68 baht. Your 3 baht meal went to 5 baht, then 10 baht and has kept on going.

 

Irritatingly, folks in the west didn't much feel OPEC's action. It was the rest of the world that took the hit. Growing high yield rice crops almost stopped, since it required a petroleum based fertilzer. That meant less food to go around in places like India and Bangladesh.

 

Stupid of the Burmese generals to cause themselves more trouble though.
